Ecoscape Environmental Design was founded in Boulder, Colorado in 2000 as a landscape design company specializing in native and edible landscapes. In 2004 we expanded from landscape design, to include installation and maintenance programs so that we could offer a more holistic ecological approach to land care. With the goal of creating exceptional outdoor living environments, we fuse functionality with aesthetic appeal to offer you the true sense of peace and wonderment right outside your door.

Ecoscape's wide diversity of landscape services includes: permaculture design, corporate wellness gardens, patio design, masonry installations, retaining wall construction, landscape maintenance, organic lawn care, and complete irrigation system management. Our broader land stewardship programs include ecological forest management, noxious weed management, ecological rehabilitation & native revegetation, and snow plowing for select mountain communities west of Boulder. Our services are customized to our clients needs and desires, so that their land enhances a healthy lifestyle for themselves and the earth.

As a landscaping company dedicated to caring for the land, we have been recognized and certified by PACE (Partners for a Clean Environment) as a Sustainable Landscape Company since 2005, based on our ecological approach toward landscaping. In 2006 we achieved certification by GreenCO (Green Industries of Colorado) recognizing our knowledge and applied skills of water conservation and soil management in our landscaping program, clearly setting us apart from other companies in the landscaping industry. **★ — Pia Loeb, July 2021**

> Absolutely horrible experience! We hired ecoscape last year to design a very small perennial garden in our front yard. It was a complete nightmare. The design is a joke, which I didn’t know until after it was planted, because I wasn’t familiar with perennials or design. The execution was even worse. They damaged an exterior tile on my house without reporting it to us. The one tree we purchased from them has horrible structure. They have no sense of design and one side of our garden is completely overgrown with one growing season and the other side is so basic. Our entire curb appeal has to be redone because of Ecoscape’s lack of professionalism. Definitely stay away from this company. Everything about working with them was a complete nightmare.

**★ — Joseph M, March 2021**

> My family met with EcoScape Environmental Design in connection with some updates we wanted for our backyard. The company portrayed themselves as being a full service firm, from design to implementation. After going over scope of project and budget of no more than $15k, we were pitched a design engagement as a first step. This design engagement came with a price tag of $1800 and was viewed as a critical component in the process. After a visit to the location and two zoom calls, the company prepared a design plan. Unfortunately, the plan delivered had no regard to the actual budget that we discussed. In fact, the price to complete the project on the plan was over double our budget ($31,439.97). In response, we tried to scale back items that we were originally discussed in connection with the scope to try to get the price down to an amount that was consistent with our original budget, but the company decided that they may not be the right fit for the project anymore. As a result, we asked the company to refund the
> "design" fee of 1800 given that the design produced was worthless given the discussed budget. Rather than refunding design fee, the company took the position that per the engagement letter, they produced a design and therefore the fee was owed. Such a position leaves consumers vulnerable to this bait and switch tactic as the company can produce whatever design they like at whatever cost notwithstanding the consumer's discussed budget and the "design" fee would still be owed. As a fully integrated company handling design and installation, this miscommunication between design and pricing should never occur unless it is done on purpose to get people to spend more on a project as they already have invested money with the company.

**Comment from Ecoscape Environmental Design:**

> Hello Joseph. Thank you for the feedback about your experience with Ecoscape Environmental Design.
> Ecoscape sets the design fee apart from the installation fee, an approach that allows us to be transparent and collaborative in our design work, and lets the client retain the sketch design should the project not progress to the installation phase.
> Companies that do not charge for designs up front will build the cost into the project’s final price to assure the time and efforts of the designers are fully compensated.
> We work with our clients to help manage expectations for budget and create designs that incorporate the desired details while respecting budget constraints. These conversations are ongoing from initial consult and through the design process as the project specifics become more defined. Understandably, initial ideas and desires for a project may not align with the actual cost.
> We strive to be transparent with our process in order to anticipate the questions and needs of the client. To assist with this effort, we are in the midst of upgrading our website to include a clear layout of our process and the financial considerations for each step.
> We appreciate your input and take the feedback to heart. We wish you all the best with your project and hope you find a company that aligns with your vision. Landscape design-build is a creative endeavor that deserves a good fit for both the client and the company.

**★★★★★ — Jen Heieck, July 2018**

> Ecoscape is not your average landscape company - they add a level of beauty and professionalism to the project to give you an outdoor space that becomes an extension of your home. We hired them to transform a small and difficult backyard into one that we could use to entertain, and went beyond what I could imagine to create a space that I enjoy daily.

**★★★★★ — Sally Madden, Nov. 2017**

> We hired Ecoscape to do a patio and side yard landscape 're-do' as they had excellent reviews but were also very "Eco-minded' in their approach. Bill Melvin and his team came in with the desire to listen to our needs and design a project around our budget. We were absolutely impressed through the initial project review to completion. Bill, Andrew and the foreman Alex were great in communicating all aspects of the project from the many changes we asked them to implement, to designing a wonderful garden space. When we asked them to complete a whole front yard project in addition, they allocated the time and the final product exceeded our expectations! We are now contemplating a back yard project next spring! Thanks Ecoscape!!

**★★★★★ — David Spires, Oct. 2017**

> Ecoscape is an absolutely outstanding landscape company. We met initially with owner Bill Melvin, who listened to our needs, then selected designer Sue Rigdon to provide a xeriscape plan for our backyard. Sue’s design met our every criterion.
>
> Sue and her workers were a joy to work with. Relying on her extensive knowledge of Colorado growing conditions, she consulted with us on plant selection and location, and always accommodated our preferences. She and her team also offered useful suggestions, such as farm-style planters and a flagstone walkway for the west side of the house.
>
> Ecospape also came in under budget, and their personnel returned after completion of the project to ensure that the plants were thriving and the drainage system worked efficiently. We are pleased with every aspect of our new, xeriscaped backyard, and would recommend Ecoscape without hesitation. They are simply superb!

**★★★★ — cherine\_herrmann, May 2015**

> Hired Ecoscape to build a backyard for our mountain house property. The work was done in a very efficient manner and to high standard. Andrew, the project manager, did a great job of overseeing the project, responding to our requests, and doing follow up work. Overall we were happy with the end result.

**★★★★★ — mkemdhm, Sept. 2014**

> Over the past year, we have had the pleasure of working with Ecoscape Environmental Design on front and back yard extensive redesign/update projects. From the initial meetings to the follow-up, we experienced a passionate, knowledgeable, and creative team who were truly engaged in creating a beautiful landscape that we would love. From management and design, to crew members, their commitment to quality was obvious in every aspect of their work. From demolition to boulder placement to patio design and plant selection, each person wanted it to be perfect and exactly the way we envisioned. Our participation was encouraged and their flexibility allowed the plan to evolve as we collaborated with each member of the Ecoscape team. The result is a beautiful landscape and an experience so positive that we highly recommend them without reservation.

**★★★★★ — beppeclo, Sept. 2014**

> Having a house in the Forumile fire area we needed a big help cutting and chipping tons of burned trees and restore the landscape severely damaged. Bill answered quickly to our request and showed up to take a deep look. Few days later we had a detailed description and estimate of the job. We approved it and had the work done in a month or so. Now our property has really improved and we are very thankful to Bill and his crew. They are very professional and reliable.

**★★★★★ — rellis500, Sept. 2014**

> Ecoscapes Environmental Design did a wonderful job on our front and side residential landscaping. The outside of the house looks beautiful now. It is hard to believe what a difference it has made! I recommend this company whole heartily!

  - Description: In Colorado, we are fortunate to have a huge abundance of redstone, which makes for great natural stone pavers for patios. Additionally, New Mexico buff sandstone is readily available too, with a variety of lighter shades in tans and creams. Ecoscape's stone masons have years of professional experience working with these materials and our designers love to utilize them when a patio is called for as part of a landscape design. Colorado rocks of all sizes, shapes, and textures also lend themselves…

  - Description: The homeowners had their property professionally landscaped 15 yrs ago, and were pleased with the results. They were the first residents in their neighborhood to use xeriscape design priciples and subsurface drip for their lawn. Now that their kids are grown, they were envisioning a more 'adult-style' landscape for entertaining and relaxing, and were ready for a makeover. During a post-project followup visit, our project manager was told that they never hung out in this area previously, but NOW…

  - Description: Do you crave being outside after a day cooped up in the office? On a chilly night that maybe isn't so appealing...unless you have a fire pit. Today's fire features come in a variety of shapes, forms, and materials. In the Boulder area, large redstone or buff slab rocks are a natural choice since they come from the nearby town of Lyons. A more formal look can be achieved by designing an outdoor fireplace set in low wall border. But what about the time and effort it takes to start a fire? Flip a s…

  - Description: Homes in newly constructed neighborhoods dominate views with their linear lines and expansive exterior surfaces. It's not until a few years later when trees and foundational planting begin to mature and soften the structures' edges, that we feel proportions and textures are more in balance. These young homeowners began working with Ecoscape when their baby was 3 weeks old. Ready to put down roots for their growing family, it made sense to invest in landscape for their oversized corner lot. Havin…

  - Description: Expansive views of the Foothills and county Open Space, is the backdrop for this contemporary west Boulder neighborhood. These newly constructed homes all started out with finished landscapes, but our client came to us looking to upgrade her patio and have it transition better to the rest of their back yard. Since their land borders open fields of prairie grasses, it was was an opportunity for Ecoscape's designer, Lisa Sangelo, PLA to utilize this overlap of biomes. From a permacultural perspect…

Bring these qualities to your backyard with a water feature designed by Ecoscape. - Description: Centrally located homes in cities provide convenience and opportunities to interact with the community in a very forward-facing way. The homeowners of this property were new to the area, but wished to integrate their landscape with local aesthetics and ethics of sustainable land stewardship. Ecoscape's landscape architect, Lisa Sangelo, utilized different hardscape materials to create better flow from one part of the property to the other. - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: Mountain homes in Colorado can be prone to wild fires without a doubt. People choose to take on 'the extra work of mountain living' usually because the views are so open and expansive, not too mention the 'wilderness' aspect. Through a well-designed landscape, it is possible to create 'defensive space' in the event of a wild fire. Materials like rock mulch, pea gravel, and natural redstone pavers make the best choice for fire retardant surfaces closest to the home. The next Firewise-zone past th…

  - Location: Boulder, CO
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: Downtown Boulder neighborhoods are known for its' cute bungalows and Victorian houses. The yard sizes are rather small, so backyard spaces have to be well designed and outdoor-living functional. Native plant varieties, small swales, and soil-building mulch help to make these compact landscapes a 'mini-watershed', since they encourage water to 'slow & sink'. Homeowners can see tangible results that are POSITIVELY impacting their local environment, when they forego 'fast-food landscaping' practice…

  - Description: Colorado neighborhoods along the Front Range vary from the relatively flat to slopped and hilly. A simple thing like a well-lit pathway can make all the difference when juggling grocery bags, firewood, and all the kid gear. It's amazing to think that clear walkways actually have a calming effect on our nervous system. Don't believe it? Next time you need to venture to your back yard, is it an easy to and fro experience? Or are you thinking it may be time to consider a landscape improvement?

  - Description: You've just had a major remodel to your landscape, and are thrilled with the outdoor living space and new masonry elements. But sigh, the garden bed plants are still small! Plants may be on their own growth timeline, but you can cleverly give a little foliage boost by strategically using tall container pots to accent your newly installed landscape. And just like any versatile accessory, you can swap it out seasonally, simply by switching out the plant material.

With today's advanced outdoor textiles and smart technology, it is possible to get shade cover in many configurations. Pergolas lend themselves to creating a sense of destination space within the yard. Add festive hanging lights and you have a party space!
