> We've been working with Kaplan Construction on smaller projects for 10+ years now. I truly appreciate how Bob believes in quality work. I never have to worry that the job won't be done right. They are very responsive and always courteous and patient.

> The last job was retiling our patio, refinishing our BBQ and firepit, and installing string lights. We are extremely happy with the results.

**★★★★★ — MkyDesign, Dec. 2016**

> I have worked with Bob and his crew for several projects including my own home. They are always very professional, courteous and most importantly I have never had to worry about their quality. Many of my designs are not standard "out of the box" ideas. Bob doesn't shy away from unique projects like many contractors do.

**★★★★★ — Jim Brown, Dec. 2016**

> Bob and his crew did an amazing job. They were able to take our vision for our 1,400 sf addition and make it a reality (see before and after pictures below). The workmanship and attention to detail is second to none. We continue to get compliments on our house from friends, family and people just passing by. We would recommend Kaplan Construction to anyone.

**★★★★★ — Nancy Iraggi, Dec. 2016**

> I am an Interior Designer working in Los Angeles and the surrounding Southern California communities. I have had the pleasure of working with Bob Kaplan and his crew on several high-end projects over the past 10 years. Highly professional, extremely knowledgeable and experienced bar none. Always a joy to collaborate with Bob and his trades as they are flexible and creative and they don't sweat the details. No matter the size or scale of your project I highly recommend Kaplan Construction for your next project.

**★★★★★ — Karin Sahm, Oct. 2016**

> We hired Kaplan Construction for a kitchen and loft remodel on our condo in Aliso Viejo. I was a bit nervous at first with suggestions made but was over the moon with the results. A team came in and quickly handled the demolish portion with clean up immediately afterwards. Once the dry wall had been removed his vision completely apparent and the change incredible. Suggestions within our budget and the completed project amazing. I would recommend Kaplan Construction and look forward to our next project.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Modern, Concrete Fireplace Renovation - Toronto** *(in Before & After)*

Having purchased a new home in Toronto, owners with an eye for contemporary design approached us to help renovate and update their newly acquired outdated field stone fireplace. Instead of tearing down the existing fireplace, this family chose to use concrete panels on top of the existing field stones to update their fireplace, without incurring the time and expense of a complete fireplace renovation.
Concrete Panels with Distressed Texture
Because our concrete panels are hand made, each piece is absolutely unique and we have the advantage of creating large or extra-large format tiles, such as we did with this project. The custom, one-of-a-kind service that we offer allows us to play with a wide range of colours and other variations, customizing each piece of the fireplace to create the best possible aesthetic. The hearth is a single piece of concrete made in the same colour and texture as the concrete panels to keep the look clean and contemporary, as well as absolutely safe because of the nature of this non-combustible material.
The distressed texture of the fireplace is created by using our lightest colour of concrete, Buff, which is made with white cement and has grey undertones. The texture, in combination with this light grey colour, gives the fireplace a contemporary and modern appearance, lifting the face of this home and letting go of some of its outdated aesthetics.

Concrete Side Tables Integrated in Fireplace Surround
The existing side tables that were incorporated into the original design of this outdated fireplace were also covered with concrete to give a cohesive look. 1” cherry wood table tops were used to finish off the contemporary look and add a pop of colour and warmth to the design. Practically speaking, this final touch ended up working beautifully for the family and eliminates the need for loose end tables in this section of the living area.
Non-combustible Concrete Ideal for Heat Resistance
The choice to use non-combustible concrete panels and a concrete hearth on fireplace surrounds is ideal for family safety. The heat-resistant concrete panels can expand and contract, and are suitably reinforced to avoid any chances of cracking. The fireplace opening can be beautifully finished to create a clean look by adding concrete panels, ensuring clean lines and a cohesive final aesthetic.
Adding concrete panelling on top of an existing fireplace structure is an excellent way to incorporate modern design elements without committing to a complete interior overhaul. The beautiful result for this Toronto family speaks volumes about how to complete a fireplace renovation in a cost-effective and time-effective manner.

**Q: Kitchen Remodel: Creating a Modern Kitchen by Painting Oak Cabinets** *(in Before & After)*

As a realtor, I often advise budget-minded clients to reuse their current kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them. I decided to take my own advise when I was ready to remodel my kitchen.
I fell in love with my South Charlotte home due to its open rooms, hardwoods floors, huge main floor master suite, and 1/2 acre lot. However, the home was built in 1988 and suffered from a severe case of "the 80s". When it came time to tackle my dated kitchen. I wanted to change the backsplash, remove the awful florescent lightbox and undercabinet lighting, and install a new stainless dishwasher and oven. But it was the dark oak cabinets that bothered me the most. With a $7,500 budget, replacing the old cabinets wasn't an option.
Luckily, the existing cabinets were solid oak and in good overall condition. First, I had my handyman completely remove the overhead soffits and moldings to make the cabinets appear as sleek as possible. I removed the doors and took them to a local woodworking shop to have spaces drilled out on the inside for European hinges. Next, I cleaned, sanded, and primed the cabinet boxes and doors before painting them using Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations in Federal Gray. The cabinet kit included
a can of dark glaze, which I used in the recesses and on the edges of the doors for an antiqued look. Finally, I added new brushed nickel hardware. With the money I saved on the cabinets, I was able to complete the entire project for $7,300.
I welcome your questions or comments!

A: The cabinets look great! Great job!

**Q: Family Room Makeover** *(in Before & After)*

From dated, dark, & ugly to modern, bright, & functional.
Family Room off of kitchen. Removed paneling, drywall, new drywall, new LED recessed lighting, new baseboards/crown trim, new entry door to garage, update fireplace with stack stone. Custom mantle made on site out of a left over fridge panel from kitchen, mounted tv, update all electrical. Customer wanted to save money and re-use fireplace insert and laminate flooring. Therefore we worked with those conditions.
Most clients don't realize the need and costs associated with electrical updates. They are very important to a remodel and make the space totally functional. In the built ins we made sure we had adequate plus, cable, telephone and conduit to snake HDMI wires and future wires from devices to TV. We then installed a Logitech harmony RF remote so all items can stay in closed cabinet. An audio optical cable was ran in conduit from TV to sound bar as well.

Client is super happy to have a nice room to enjoy daily with their family. We were happy to be a part of it and enjoy the transition.
BEFORE
BEFORE: Fireplace Insert (reused)
DURING: Entertainment / Electrical Preperations

DURING:

AFTER: Completed (Laminate flooring re-used)
AFTER: Same Fireplace Insert
AFTER: Main Lights off to show: Built Ins Back Lighting - Strip LED

A: Great transformation!
