**Q: Removable Wallpaper / Temporary Wallpaper** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello! I have a question about removable wallpaper. This may sound silly, but its true... ALL wallpaper is removable in my mind, if you buy the wall paper removing solution... Ive tried doing my research here on temporary wall paper but I cant seem to find a solution. Some of these things claim to be removable but dont really give me an explanation or an example of what the wall is going to look like after you have removed this "removable" wallpaper. When I talk about removable paper I think its wallpaper that you stick onto your wall, then when you need to take it down you can just unstick it without damaging the wall and not leaving residue... I need to make sure the apartment will be left the way I got it when I eventually move, so I just want to make sure something like THIS doesn't happen to my walls. IF someone can just tell me that the wall will look the same when I take this "removable" paper down then I am sold.

A: Hi!
From the point of view of a wallpaper installer, I can say that a clean removal depends greatly on the preparation of the walls before any wallpaper is installed. Cheap watered down paint, dust caught between the paint and drywall, previously damaged and untreated drywall; any of these can cause problems when removing wallpaper, even the "temporary" kind (or decals).
So what can you do? As Robert mentioned before, essentially create a sound, solid layer above whatever condition your wall is currently in. We personally use Gardz whenever we see walls that have any signs of trouble (it dries mostly clear). Downside? You will have to repaint your wall back to its original color when it is time to move on.
If your walls are already in great painted condition, or you used Gardz, the next step toward success is choosing the right material. Fabrics and paper-backed wallpapers tend to shred when you try removing them, so try to choose a non-woven backed or vinyl backed material instead.
Next, make sure to ask for "strippable" clear glue. There will still be residue, but you can wipe it down when the time comes. No heavy duty or clays, as they are harder to clean later.
The best thing to do is to hire a trusted wallpaper contractor in your area, and make sure you're doing what you can to tip the odds in your favor: wall prep, wallpaper type, glue and the right skills to install.
