It needs to be reworked from the ground up entirely but the roof on it is fine. I was quoted $14,500 for the work which half of it is labor costs. I plan to have composite decking like Trex or Fiberon and vinyl railings, and beyond that it is a pretty basic back porch, not high off the ground, will have ”skirting”. I have searched for a while to figure out what people are charging for things like this and I cannot find answers. I don’t know anyone whose done their porch either. I have nothing to base it on and I’m having a hard time getting anyone to my home for a quote. It seems like a lot of contractors are looking for large projects only, or I’m too far away. And another I found does not provide a free quote. A: We would be happy to help, give us a call at 508-726-2056 **Q: Rubber Roof Flat Roofing Area** *(in The Old House)* A part of our roof is flat so installer recommended to go with white rubber material. It turned out like this. Is this a standard installation because it‘s just so ugly??? This black tar finish is just offensive. A: I have been roofing for 16+ years and that is not EPDM (Rubber), white or black. That is rolled roofing. Still I good roof but I would have recommended either TPO or EPDM membrane. First would have installed either 1/2” HD Board Insulation, 2”, or even thicker insulation (whichever customer/client preferred). Then have that insulation held down by screws and plates. Then made the TPO or EPDM fully adhered and would have tucked membrane at least 1’ behind the siding. **Q: Roof coating over roll roofing on low pitch roof?** *(in Home Repair)* I have a large cape cod style dormer on the back of my house, with a very low pitch roof. It's currently covered in roll roofing, and I've noticed a couple fo small leaks develop this spring. I'd like to replace the entire house roof in a year or two, so I'd rather wait until then to replace the dormer's roof. Is it possible to cover a roll asphalt roof with some kind of roof coating to seal it for another year or 2? The roof is not visible from any angle, so looks are not important. If this is possible, what kind of coating should I use? A: For low sloped roofs on a house rolled roofing is good but I highly recommend going back with a flat roof system. Either going over it with 1/2” HD Board Insulation or 2” ISO or even thicker. Then securing it with plates/screws. Then covering everything with a TPO or EPDM (Rubber) membrane.
