Dean Nota Architect is an established Los Angeles firm with over thirty years of experience in residential and commercial projects. We are located in Hermosa Beach, a coastal suburb of metropolitan LA. Our current work includes proposals for custom, client occupied, buildings for sites in Los Angeles, the western United States and Central America.

Dean Nota's work is guided by a design process that envisions a building as an orchestrated spatial experience, shaped by site context, light, structure and material expression. Hierarchy of scale and visual axes are articulated in spaces that are subtly defined and interlocking in a deliberate progression, culminating in an opening to a view, whether of the ocean, the city or a glimpse into a secluded courtyard. Particularly adept at bringing light into interiors in unexpected ways, Nota harnesses the third dimension to animate and further order interiors while detail, craft and material discipline provide a framework for the overall composition.

Through publication, awards and teaching, Dean Nota is committed to progressing the legacy of Modernism. His work has been published worldwide, including twenty six issues of GA Houses in Japan. He has received design awards from local and regional chapters of the AIA and Sunset Magazine, including a 2008 AIA National Small Projects Award for the Pfeiffer Studio.

Nota's houses have been featured in sixteen books and in print publications in the US, Japan, Spain, Italy, Russia, France and Germany. He has participated in exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, Milan, and Madrid, and he has lectured at USC, MoCA, California State Polytechnic University as well as local AIA chapters. In 2008 he participated in the Small Projects Awards Panel at the AIA Convention in Boston. His houses have regularly appeared on AIA sponsored home tours and, in 2006, the Reyna Residence was a featured tour project for Architectural Digest's, Architecture Days.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Flooring** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please provide details on the tile floor?

A: This floor is poured in place concrete. Not tile.

**Q: What is the flooring?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Flooring used?

A: 16" X 32" Honed Limestone Tiles

**Q: Extraordinary designs! Question about exterior siding** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please tell me what the exterior (wood?) siding is and how it was finished ? Looks great but I have some longer-term maintenance / appearance concerns in this or almost any climate ?

Many thanks

A: The wood is mangaris hardwood, imported from Indonesia. If properly sourced, a sustainable material. Hardwoods used on the exterior need to be carefully installed over a well drained and ventilated rainscreen, otherwise cupping may occur. The wood is finished with Sikkens Cetrol, that requires yearly maintenance in the coastal location of this home.

**Q: What are exterior materials used** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Yes, The house is finished in a palate of two custom colors of pigmented stucco.

**Q: Home Plans** *(in Photo Questions)*

We love the modern homes you have on the Houzz site; do you do only custom work, or do you sell plans? My husband and I are planning on a low maintenance home for a narrow city lot with a rooftop deck to maximize our limited view of the Rockies.

A: Hello Joan: The houses that you see on my profile are site and client specific. Good residential design results from a synthesis of client needs with site opportunities and challenges (including zoning and design review), in a mutual, client - architect quest for a unique architectural statement. Generic plans for sale cannot give you this level of design, especially on a "narrow city lot".

**Q: Can you please provide the details on this couch?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The drawer units are integrated into a commercial office wall unit that is shown in the picture. They are suspended from the wall on floor to ceiling tracks that also support the shelving. Several companies make systems like this: Knoll, Herman Miller, Steelcase etc. The Container Store http://www.containerstore.com/ sells a system similar call ELFA.
