## Community Q&A

**Q: Redoing ugly hi fi** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband came home with this hi fi (it was free he says, isn't that shocking!?). I hate it but he loves it so I'd like to paint it and give it a facelift so it isn't such an eyesore. Any ideas?

I'm thinking of replacing the fabric that covers the speakers with burlap of something rustic and maybe painting it a dark brown/black-ish colour.

Our house has a lot of pine in it (ceilings, some walls) and sort of a rustic, cottage vibe so I want to make sure it fits in with the place (although it doesn't have to go with the orange wall that's in the photo, I think I'm changing that soon!).

Any advice or inspirational images would be sooooo appreciated!

A: Hard to be specific without knowing your style and color preferences. From what you say I think you have enough wood so I suggest you use a color for the wood...please prepare the piece well as directed so the paint will adhere properly. I would not use burlap over the speakers unless you are planning to use this as a stereo...even then use a recommended audio fabric. If you are repurposing the piece...like for storage...I suggest a colorful fabric that will go with your paint color...or what I would do if it were mine..I would replace it with mirror. I would also replace the hardware. Of course, it could always fall down the steps on the way to be painted in which case you might have to throw it out..... just saying!

**Q: Poll: Keep or replace old kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi everyone, this is the old kitchen that exists in my farmhouse which I am going to do a big renovation of.

Would you start from scratch or work with the bones of this existing kitchen?

I know the cabinets will need replacing but I just wonder if there are some things I could keep.

A: Need lots more information....like what is the budget. of what material are the current cabinets, what is the overall floorplan, what is your style?

**Q: Something Missing** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Looking for ideas! I feel as though something is missing in my living room space, (although I haven't painted yet, which I think will help when I get to it next month) but I need something to pop. Colour is not something I love (what I do love is serene monochromatic schemes) so adding any overly saturated tones is not an option for me. Maybe it is the navy cushions not working (too much contrast?) Can't quite put my finger on what is lacking/missing for me. Suggestions welcome!

A: I cannot see your other walls but you are missing color. I suggest some colorful, preferably large pieces of art. I would not do hanging plants; instead I would replace some of the things on your coffee table with a succulent garden. You are off to a good start. Hope this helps!

**Q: Color for door and shutters?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello
We would love your thoughts on a good color for the front door and shutters? Any other ideas to jazz up the entrance? The siding is a pretty yellow.
Thank you!

A: here are some yellows with grey.. :)

**Q: What to do with this Corner Pillar** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I took this picture from the main door. This is what guests would see when they step into the house.
Can you give me some ideas on what to do with that structural pillar that is sitting right at the line of vision? Thank you!

A: Can you share the floorplan? Perhaps enlarge it, enclose a ventless fireplace and clad the entire thing in stone veneer? Ditto into a bookcase. It does need to look intentional. Think outside the box and have fun with it. I hope this helps. :)

**Q: Want to ad black to exterior of house.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Our new house is looking BLAH! I want to change the window frames, front door and eavestrough to black. Any thoughts?

A: Black will look too harsh. Start small with a bright color such as a cheery yellow on your front door and some windowboxes. Then, if you are not satisfied, let's revisit the color scheme. I am posting photos of 4 seasons of windowboxes for you. I hope this helps. :)
