ADRIAN SMITH Landscape Architecture & Design, is a full service landscape architecture firm founded upon the belief that landscapes need to create a meaningful connection between people and nature. 

The firm’s founder, Adrian Smith, grew to cherish the rural landscape of his hometown in Western New York and learned to appreciate the simple order of the agricultural landscape juxtaposed with the wildness of native lands. Building on that idea, our current work seeks to find a balance between the uniformity of the cultivated landscape and the diversity of the natural landscape, all the while infusing the design with unique significance.

We love to collaborate. We place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of getting to know our clients and we value their input throughout the design and construction process. Our success stems from our ability to establish and nurture long-lasting relationships with our clients, contractors and fellow professionals. We also know that with a garden, maintenance and management of the site is equally as important as the design. To that end, we work with our clients to establish a comprehensive regimen for the long-term care and viability of their properties.

We are equally at home with small and large scale projects - knowing that good design is important no matter the scale. We are also comfortable working in urban, suburban and rural settings. We have experience creating both vast meadows and technically sound roof gardens.

During all these years one landscape architect stands apart from the others - that would be Adrian Smith.

> Adrian helped establish a vision for the property and then designed a beautiful series of gardens – a pool landscape, a deer resistant entry garden and we supplemented the native plants in the surrounding woods.  We spent time talking about what was important about the project, a range for a budget and a plan to implement it over time.  He helped me understand the advantages of simplicity, being true to the space itself, and the benefits of using native plants.  Some of my concerns were more basic: I wanted to lower water use and did not want an overly manicured garden.  He met my concerns and created a landscape that we enjoy in all seasons.

A: The white flowers in this photo are a variety of Potentilla suffruticosa, a shrub in the rose family that has varieties with white and with yellow flowers. It's deer resistant and native to the NE USA.

**Q: Height of fence?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What are the measurements on this fence? Total height, distance between rails? Thanks!

A: We design each element of our projects to meet the needs, codes and character of the landscape in which it resides. This fence enclosed a pool so it had to be 48" high. It would not meet code in all jurisdictions, so if you are installing a fence, be sure to consult your local authorities for fence regulations.

A: the gate is just like the fence, only with a diagonal cross piece for extra stability.

**Q: What kind of trees are these.** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: These trees are Betula nigra/River Birch.

What is the name of that tree and how long does it take to get to that height

A: These are River Birch, Betula nigra. They are a great substitute for the Paper bark birch which is not as reliable as it once was. They are different (taller and wider, and their bark is not white, but more of a tan color) but they have their own merits.

A: the pool is about 15 ft x 40 ft.
