**Q: Does the fireplace look like a toy ?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi, I've been fortunate to get lots of help from houzz on getting this old house together. On one occasion long ago I posted a picture of this living room and someone commented it fireplace looked like a toy I abandoned this formal living room project but I want to revisit it. I am now willing to accept that it may not be the ideal focal point of this area. Any ideas on what I can place here instead? I am also looking for pillows? I'd like to get something muted that pulls in the rug and maybe a small framed Parisian wall art to put behind the candles if You all think fireplace is ok ??? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance .

A: I can see a large sunburst type mirror over the fireplace or a larger piece of art a little wider than the fireplace.  Or a group of various sizes of art in an asymmetric arrangement.  Don't worry, the art piece does not have to be smaller than the fireplace.  The mirror you have is too small for that big blank wall.  And you can always flank the fireplace with 2 matching tall vase/pots if it needs it.

**Q: Need advice with redesigning of fireplace ASAP** *(in Polls)*

Just bought a new home. It was built in the 70's and needs complete renovation. Our master bedroom fireplace is horrible and I am having a hard time coming up with ideas of how to redesign it. It is in a weird spot, stuck between our closet & bathroom door so we don't have much space to work with. We are remodeling the house with a Spanish style look in mind so we want something that fits that taste and is also timeless. So far we like the second picture with the Mexican tiled hearth and plastered sides. Keep in mind we are putting dark wood floors in and staining the wood ceilings dark also....... ( for the picture of our home, we are dry walling that loft off so that space will be all wall. No ladder or banister) PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!!! Any ideas?!?!?!

Fyi : we are planning on getting a reclaimed piece of wood for the shelf & to mount our tv above that

A: I see that you posted back in May but I'll give you my thoughts anyway.  Your house is not Spanish style by any means.  I designed in Arizona for years and know the look.  Have you considered embracing your home's contemporary style and going with it?  Contemporary can be really nice and it looks like you have a great home to work with.

**Q: Need Help on updating an ugly fireplace!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I first wanted to completely gut it out as I kind of hate the 2 sided corner fireplace, but the cost for what I wanted was a little high, I was unsure if I could ever get my money back from it. We did the kitchen instead. I am wondering if there is a creative and less expensive way to update this fireplace. A side note I would like to convert it back to wood from gas. I was thinking of replacing the mantel with one that has molding and is white. Also thinking of adding a couple slabs of blue stone in front of the hearth on top of the brick.  Lastly anything else I can do for the screen? We like a more traditional looking designs for our 1979 Colonial

A: I like the whitewashing of the brick, too.  It does wonders.  And if you want to keep the red brick (if it's in good condition) as a contrast color in the room, that's okay too since it's classic.  But some sort of trim and/or mantel needs to be added to update it.  A plain red brick fireplace does not look good.

Hi , these were just installed in my house , the colors are nice but It's not exactly what I expected

A: My opinion is that more contemporary interiors, especially with lower ceilings like yours, look much better with less fussy window coverings.  Think nice wood blinds, simple duette shades or clean lined fabric roman shades.  They make the space look larger.  The more ornate window treatments (swags, cornices, valances, etc.) look good  in older houses with high ceilings, crown moldings, etc.

**Q: Most Loathed item you WANT to get rid of but can't?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Is there something in your house that you wish you could get rid of but can't due to sentimental reasons or maybe someone else in your house really, really loves it?  What is it?

A: Marie Bdt.....don't throw that chair out, I'll take it!  It's gorgeous! That would cost a fortune in antique and vintage shops and looks like it's covered in damask.  Nice.
