> We won the biggest design/build lottery with Lux Construction, who we very highly recommend. During a stressful time for building projects, with exponential price-hikes on raw materials, kooky COVID materials shortages and sub-contractors stretched well beyond normal limits, Lux kept us in the loop, created efficiencies and brought our complex project in pretty much on-time and on-budget. From the initial meeting with Andrew Gold, where unlike other contractors he basically sold us on a "we solve problems" mentality and his laid-back personal style to the completion of our basement and backyard renovation, we felt like not only were we always in good hands, but we were working with people it was a joy to be around. The Lux team is friendly, considerate and collaborative. Our site lead Elliot always came with a point-of-view but left space for me to have mine as well, and was good at building trust, being consistently a reliable communicator and diffusing the inevitable small frustrations that go along with these kinds of projects. We also feel like the work was done in an efficient way because the designer was also the builder so we avoided big hand-offs and big confusions. Lux also steered, negotiated and navigated other subs on the job (for studio and fencing installations) with grace and firmness when necessary. Oh and maybe the best part is that the work is gorgeous and of very high integrity and quality!

> Several years ago we had Lux remodel our kitchen and that was such a good experience that we were inclined to go with them again when the time came to add a bathroom to our house. But we wanted to do our due diligence so we contacted two other companies to get quotes. Not only was Lux’s quote competitive but Andrew seemed more immediately knowledgeable than the others and when the quote came in it was far more detailed than the others, with every aspect broken down into elements. The actual process was delayed for a number of reasons beyond anyone’s control (pandemic, fires, etc) but Lux stayed in regular contact and always let us know their plans and expectations. They always showed up when they said they would. Getting the work done during a pandemic was slightly anxiety inducing but they set up a good barrier to protect both us and their teams and their own staff was excellent about wearing masks. Some of the subcontractors were not so good about that but at least we were still protected by the plastic barrier. The actual work was done superbly with every detail attended to. The entire basement has been transformed by this work. I would recommend Lux without any reservations.

> Lux Construction was exceedingly professional and we would certainly hire them for more projects in the future. The quality of their work is top notch and the crew was punctual, courteous, and tidy. They had to do some problem solving for a unique project at our house and completed it on time nonetheless.

> Lux Construction (Ian and Andrew) were pretty amazing. Really professional and honest. Nothing but can do attitudes as we kept running into unforeseen snags in the process of renovation and added to the workload. They helped us with important decisions like what was absolutely necessary and what may be extraneous. All workers in house were super friendly, polite, and were there when they said they would be. They took care to not disrupt our everyday life as two dated bathrooms became something modern and wonderful!

> We are very happy with our beautiful kitchen. Lux has great subs. OK organization. Would have been happier with better communication re: timing of when painters, electrician, plumber etc would be on site. But we tend to be fussy people. Overall a great project.

**★★★★★ — Betty Melcher, Sept. 2017**

> A friend at work told us her neighbors had LUX remodel their home and were very pleased. I decided to get three estimates, but on the second one, knew this company was the one for us. Andrew was right in line with my ideas and added some others for us to consider and we just really meshed. He understood my vision and the kitchen looks spectacular. The bid was spot on, the work quality was excellent, the guys were great about cleaning every day, all questions and any concerns dealt with right away. We couldn't be happier with the results!

**Comment from Lux Construction:**

> Thank you for the kind words, working together on your kitchen was a great experience for our team too!

**★★★★★ — rogersryanr, Feb. 2016**

> We hired Lux Construction to finish our basement and we are extremely happy with the outcome. Lux Construction promptly arrived at our house to talk with us about what we envisioned for our basement and came up with different ideas that would fit our budget. They designed a well thought out floor plan that used the space very efficiently. When they started construction, we could not believe how clean the crew left the construction site every day. They were available whenever we needed to discuss something with them and were attentive to our needs. I would recommend Lux Construction to anyone who is looking for a very professional, honest construction company that provides excellent results.

> We first met Lux Construction when we needed a glass brick exterior shower wall replaced on our third floor. The wall, which had failed and caused rot around the opening, is a window, approximately 3'x4' in a shower tiled with small stone tile and subway tiles. Our fear was that the whole shower enclosure would need to be redone. Lux removed the existing glass brick, had a new glass brick window built, and installed it so expertly we did not need to replace a single tile. The wall supporting the window was also reconstructed and the window properly flashed.
> Lux worked with Nordling Engineering and Laura Migliori Architecture to help reinforce structural issues from a previous remodel. This project included opening and reinforcing bearing walls on every floor of our three story plus basement home.
> Since then, we have had Lux totally remodel our primary bathroom, adding a shower in extra closet space. They were creative about saving our original hex tile floor and matching the tile almost exactly for the new shower. They worked with us on the details, and were willing to meet our changes and time frame as well. The bath remodel impacted every floor of the house, and each issue that arose was addressed with options and sound advice based on best practices
> Last spring we had Lux patch and replaster our living room ceiling, which had suffered many new cracks during several remodeling projects. It now shows no cracks.
> Lux partners show up at the worksite every morning to start the job, and check in again in the evening. Every site is left clean every night. Communication is constant during a project. The crew is polite and respectful of homeowner privacy, impeccably clean and quiet, and skilled.

> Lux demolished and rebuilt two bathrooms for us, as well as removed a chimney. These guys were so sweet, we miss them now that they're gone. Our house was kept clean, and when the chimney removal made a lot of dust, they brought in a team of cleaners who polished every nook and cranny of our basement. They had to open a hole in my stairway wall for new pipes, and the patch job they did when they sealed it up is undetectable from the original wall. Our new bathrooms look great.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Wallpaper** *(in Photo Questions)*

What is the wallpaper here? It is gorgeous!

A: It's from Walnut Wallpaper, but I can't seem to find it on their site at the moment...

**Q: vanity kind wood?** *(in Photo Questions)*

What kind of wood is the vanity?

A: Walnut with an oil rubbed finish

**Q: What to do with pink brick?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are looking to paint our house. We're thinking white trim with gray paint but I'd love to hear any ideas or suggestions.

A: I really like the brickwork on your home, though the steps and columns could be integrated a bit better.

**Q: New hardwood floor** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I have hardwood in my entry and kitchen which both adjoin the dining room. I would like to update my. Dining room and get rid of the white carpeting. I will probably be unable to match the hardwood because it is 15 years old. Can I do a different shade in the dining room without it looking strange?

A: I have to disagree, assuming your flooring is actual hardwood a pro can easily install and refinish to match the existing, though it would require refinishing the existing hardwood too. If you want the spaces to read as one, this is the best approach.

On the other hand, if you're hoping to create an accent in the space then Granite Grannies is spot on!

**Q: Paint colors and Balance for mid-century style brick house** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What paint colors for you recommend for the front door, surrounding trim, carport and roof eaves?

I'll be adding a safety rail at the front door in a simple mission design.

Any ideas on how to balance out the big blank triangle on the left?

A: I would look to find a sculptural plant for that wall, maybe some sort of evergreen along the lines of the attached image. I would also be inclined towards adding some low walls to break up the front yard, hopefully you could add some definition to the space?

**Q: Glass block** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Is glass block for bathrooms an outdated look?

A: To my design eye glass block is a dated solution to most design problems. That said, there are some photos above (most notably from ASV Interiors) that are stunning. If you haven't already jumped on the block, I would consider templated glass panels.
