The footprint of the kitchen needed an update. There was a lot of space to work with. There was no place for the refrigerator to fit where it was not blocking something, and the water heater took up valuable space (that could easily be relocated). Additionally, for such a large room, the countertops were surprisingly limited along the main exterior wall. We relocated the water heater to the utility closet, which left a good pocket for the refrigerator next to the original chimney, and then added an island to create additional counter space, and storage for the microwave. The island also creates a nice gathering area for guest while the chef cooks at the slide in gas range. We used an open horizontal shaped light fixture to further define the space. A: Wow!
