Hope this helps. **Q: guidelines for mixing metals for kitchen finishes?** *(in Design Dilemma)* It seems anything goes these days, but I’m looking for any guideline help for choosing metal finishes (not black) in my kitchen for a new build. “Mixing metals” sounds like it should be easy but I assume it should be thought out... is there a strategy for this? For instance, my appliances are black and stainless but I love polished nickel & wanted that for my faucet finish but I can’t do a polished finish for cabinet hardware due to young children & prints so those would have to be a brushed/stainless. Then I liked pendant lighting for island w some black but the metal mixed in w those was chrome... So a polished nickel faucet with stainless appliances & hardware & then pendant lights w some chrome on them just seems...well....random. What can one learn about how to appropriately “mix metals” for finishings in a kitchen? A: Cabinet Hardware selection is dependant a variety of factors; style of kitchen, existing metals (appliances), and design preferences. It is difficult to formulate a proper response when we cannot actually see your kitchen and all of the factors that bring the room together, but here are a few things you can consider. 1\. I would recommend that if you see a pendant online, contact the supplier and ask if that same version comes in another finish. Sometimes that is not always transparent online. 2\. Consider an all black fixture so that you are not competing with finish colours. 3\. A combination of knobs & pulls in different lengths is completely acceptable. For example, on smaller drawers you can add a knob or a small 3" - 4" pull and on longer cabinets (pantries) or longer pan drawers you can add a longer pull in a 6" - 8" pull (of course dependant on the drawer/cabinet size. Remember: knobs can tend to look busy. If black is not your thing with cabinet hardware and you don't want to go with stainless, consider a metal with a slight patina (of course again dependant on the style of your kitchen). We’ve had our home for a couple of years, and except for the occasional wreath and the bench, we have done nothing to the front of our home. I do not have an eye for design, so I welcome any and all suggestions. Also, do you think the door looks outdated or needs a different color? I’m thinking of putting some planters on either side of the door, but unsure of color. There’s also a nice empty space on the right of the door that I’m unsure what to do with. Thank you in advance for your help!! A: I may be going against the grain here (have not read all of the comments). The first thing I notice is all of the white trim. It looks very busy and contrasting against the red brick & Siding. I love the cedar shake siding, but I find they are a bit lost in the mix and have not truly come to life (give them a new coat of stain). I would suggest painting all of the trim a charcoal, black or Beige - this will also make your roof pop. I think you will find that these colours will help to neutralize the red a bit and warm it up. I feel this look truly updates the look of your exterior and creates some grounding and class to the look of your property without it losing its integrity. I agree on changing the front door and doing away with the screen all together. I love screens, but you can always opt for a retractable screen so that it doesn't distract from the door. I love the look of this door. It will add light and privacy at the same time. I agree with the above comments that something has to be done about the shrubbery. Either remove or reduce.
