> We hired Steve Webber to renovate the kitchen in our 30 year old East Vancouver condo. He transformed it from a tiny galley style kitchen into a large open space with over twice the work space. We worked together to design a space that fit our needs and budget. A wall was removed and all the old cabinets were replaced with beautifully crafted solid wood cabinets made by Steve in his Roberts Creek workshop.

**Q: Cork flooring in a bathroom? Any "real living" experiences?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have found a lovely cork flooring option we would like to use in our bathroom remodel (Wicander - Flock Moonlight). I have read all the pros and cons and understand that cork can be used in bathrooms if the edges are sealed properly with silicone. We have no children or pets at home anymore. Any input is welcome

A: We used cork in our bathroom and have one very sloppy teenage daughter who showers a lot and gets water on it regularly. It holds up surprisingly well and is beautiful! I put it down about four years ago and it has been wet a lot. It is extremely durable. I suspect yours will not be subject to the same level of abuse. The only down side to cork that I can see is the cost. It is pricier than other options. The product I used had sealed edges, and came in panels that clicked together. You can find it at most flooring places as well as the big box building supply stores.

**Q: Should I save these chairs?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are demolishing my parent's house which is very tired and outdated (don't look at the carpet!!). They have had their dining setting forever and it's solid as a rock so we've decided to keep the table for the new house and get it re-stained, however, I'm not sold on the chairs. Do you think these chairs are worth saving? The other chairs are the same but have no arms and the 2 end chairs have arms (pictured). I was considering getting these end chairs re-upholstered and buying new ones for the rest of the chairs around the table. Is it possible to make these chairs look good?

Any help is much appreciated!

A: If you are not sure, I would say keep them. They do strike me as a bit dated perhaps, but they have some interesting features and they appear to be in good condition. I am designing and building a chair right now and am realizing that consumers can be ruthless and fickle about taste. As we know, many styles come back in fashion. Meanwhile, the pursuit of contemporary design can be extremely costly.

**Q: Paint 4 yr old maple kitchen cabinets?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would choose BM classic gray which looks cream in my kitchen light & would blend well with the corian which has gray, beige & cream specs. What is your experience with painted cabinets? The wood floor is very close in color to the cabinets.Also what backsplash would you use for a classic look? Suggestions please.

A: With the wood floor it looks too woody to me. They are nice cabinets and the floor looks nice.  I'd paint them white \[Benjamin Moore cloud white\].

**Q: Should I paint my maple wall unit white?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am having my natural maple kitchen cabinets painted white and am unsure about whether to paint the wall unit in the adjoining family room as well.  The railing going upstairs will remain natural maple and is visible from the family room.  The flooring in the kitchen is Brazilian Cherry up to just behind the sofa, carpet in the family room and up the stairs currently a putty color, but may change to a more grey tone.

My entire home is just too "woody" with yellow ( from the yellowed maple" and red (from the hardwood and furniture).  I am hoping to create a more calm palette by spraying the kitchen a shade of white, changing the backsplash to a light grey subway tile, but don't know what to do with the wall unit.  My husband likes wood and would like to keep it the way it is.

I would appreciate anyone's suggestions/advice.

A: I think the grain on the mantle is nice, but the cabinets below look a bit uneven. Painting them will clean this up and lighten the feel overall, or simplify it even more and paint the whole unit. I love the look of natural wood, but too much of it can be heavy, especially if it yellows. You might also consider changing the pulls if it is in your budget.

**Q: Can you tell me where I can find this table?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This is a fairly standard item for those of us that enjoy building rustic furniture. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of one on my website other than a pedestal in the works in the "about me" section. This one looks like it might be made of alder with a light walnut stain. Getting one custom built should cost about the same as a similar quality store bought table. Check your local building supply stores \[preferably smaller outlets\] for names of builders. Otherwise it can be shipped from here. Store bought?... there is a store here called Restoration Hardware that carries this type of table. They probably have a website. Good luck. It's a beauty. I am including images of a coffee table with similar details and lighter finish for reference

**Q: Need help for kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Do you have any ideas of what I could use here? This is the side of refrigerator with no wall and is pathway from kitchen to living room.  I have wine rack there now

A: Ideally a tall, narrow bookcase/shelving unit custom sized makes a nice transition between kitchen area and dining room assuming adequate passageway.
