> Heidi took us out of our familiar and introduced us to beautiful plants that we enjoy 12 months a year. She provided a full plan, and plant listing list with care instructions which has been very helpful. 2 years later, it has matured to form the outdoor spaces we love and live in. She was on time, honored the budget, a wonderful listener and made our property more dear to us.

**Comment from Ashworth Design Studio:**

> Absolutely delightful to work with both of you. So satisfying when a client loves their garden and cares for it as you have done for yours.

**★★★★★ — B Sandberg, Jan. 2016**

> Heidi designed our garden two years ago. We’re still working on building out the finishing touches and plantings, but even in an unfinished state her design has turned a ho-hum space into a daily delight. Passersby often stop to admire the garden and we love spending time in our Heidi-inspired haven. Thanks Heidi!

**Comment from Ashworth Design Studio:**

> Thank you! It was a pleasure collaborating with both of you to create an appropriate entry to your lovely new home.

> It was a pleasure working with Heidi on completely redoing my patio garden for my new home. Heidi designed, made the plant selections and executed the design of the garden while accommodating my requests. The results were great!
>
> She is very easy to work with and worked within my budget. She didn't even charge me for some labour overage!!
>
> I would work with her again on my next project and I highly recommend her.

> Heidi helped me prune our two very overgrown Japanese Maples. She explained why each cut was necessary and was very patient while I worried about each cut. But the fact of the matter, each pruning cut WAS necessary and the result was two lovely trees that now show not only the beauty of the canopy, but the graceful form of the trees themselves. Heidi loves what she does and it shows.

 - Description: A welcoming garden was designed for a thoughtfully planned and beautifully crafted home on one of the "inner San Juan Islands". The property includes mature evergreen woods, a sunny meadow, a productive edibles garden, entry courtyard, private shaded patio and an art studio. The landscape designer was involved with the gardens immediately surrounding the home, studio and patio which borders a native wood. The homeowners who love to garden spend many happy hours creating new groves of future big…

## Community Q&A

**Q: Which grout??** *(in Design Dilemma)*

The pic shows our shower tile and the rocks will be in the niche and the border around. The trouble is which grout? The pic shows a charcoal grout at the top and a pearl gray at the bottom. So which do you think?

A: Absolutely the charcoal. It will save you grief later with trying to make it look clean, and won't detract from your tiles and pebbles.

**Q: Fireplace full stone or half ? Which one should I go with?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Confused with fireplace .... Should I go with full stone fireplace or half stone fireplace ?

A: It looks like the fireplace doesn't align with the ceiling beams. If that can't be changed I'd go with the lower fireplace surround.
Will you be using a deeper wall color? The full height feels a bit heavy and more rustic than the light walls and painted box beams suggest.

**Q: What goes with this sofa?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm helping my father decorate his new house in south Texas near the beach. He brought this sofa from his old house, and I have no idea what rugs, drapery, etc. will go with it. It's a Jacobean floral print, primarily shades of blue and red, on a beige background. It's not really my taste, and I'm not sure how to make it blend in with the casual, beach vibe of the house. Any suggestions for rugs, drapes, lamps, other upholstery patterns, will be greatly appreciated!

A: What does your dad like? If he's only mildly interested in the decor you could give him two or three choices in order to involve him in creating his new home.
Perhaps if you develop a theme, or keywords together with him it would help in making decisions and creating a cohesive design. One thought is to think more "naval" than "seaside" as that tends to be more masculine.
I like the idea of a sisal or seagrass rug, but suggest it out of a synthetic fiber indoor/outdoor rug that won't stain and can be cleaned.
For color matching take the throw pillow cover along when shopping. Personally I would look for warmer neutrals (beige/tan) and match the green and deeper blue hues from the upholstery. These will hold their own with the strong orange hue of the flooring.
For contrast in patterns, using solids and stripes for throw pillows on the sofa and for other fabrics in the space will dilute the strength of the floral pattern.

**Q: Am I seeing things?? Tile sample doesn't match what's installed.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

The color of my tile sample seems completely off to me. When they installed it, I immediately thought it didn't look how I recalled. Well today I took the sample to where we are building, along with some discarded peices back to check, and they are off to me.
My my question is, one does anyone else see it? And two, is this a common thing for the dye to be off?
The tile name (Siena gray) on the box matches the name of what I ordered, but perhaps they boxed the wrong color.... But the matching name makes it harder to prove if it is indeed an error.
I'm heading to the tile store in the morning, but thought I would ask here beforehand for any suggestions or tips for how to approach the builder. Thanks in advance!
My sample in the first photo is on the right.
Sample on top
Sample in middle, all other tiles are discards from the new build.

A: evang83, I'm sorry you are having to deal with this frustrating and disappointing situation. This would be a good topic for Houzz to feature periodically as its integral to the content of the platform.
Being a professional interior designer for over twenty years many hours were dedicated to heading off these types of issues. We were responsible for making sure samples were at the jobsites and for physically checking products at various stages. For major retail projects we would fly to the warehouse and have all the stone laid out and inspect EVERY piece. I only had a few "oops", but they really stand out in my memory.
Hiring a professional with the experience to know what can go wrong and how to head off mistakes can pay for itself pretty quickly. Many days I considered myself a problem solver rather than a creative designer.
In this (porcelain tile?) situation it may not apply, but one thing to consider is that in the construction and manufacturing industries many workers are male. Color blindness is not uncommon. Even the well intentioned may not be able to detect a color difference, and those without a this physical challenge also vary widely in their ability to see color.

**Q: Window treatment dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Looking for suggestions on window treatments to compliment the color scheme of this room...it's really dark in the room and would like to lighten it up.

A: If this was my room I would start by taking down the curtains. Its much easier to visualize the new solution when the thing you don't want is removed from the equation.
Also, my eye is drawn to the painted tin tile on the mantle. Visually it is too "heavy" in that location. I'd find a new place for it, or paint it to blend with your wall color which would highlight its interesting texture.

**Q: Window Treatment Dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

what is wrong with this window and drapery??

A: Your window is beautiful! What is your functional requirement for a window covering here? Decoration, privacy, sun control,...?
