## Community Q&A

**Q: How can we fix the exterior of our home?** *(in Porches & Decks)*

I love the look of a white symmetrical victorian farmhouse.  How can I renovate this exterior to add charm and curb appeal?  I don't have a problem with painting the brick, and removing the old metal siding.  Also, the current porch is much too small to be used.  I would like to extend its depth and length, perhaps wrapping around the right side of the house.  We can also move the rail fence away from the house if needed.  The oak tree is nice in the summer, but looks ugly in the winter and spring because it holds onto its dead leaves.  I wouldn't be adverse to cutting it down; we have plenty of trees and this one doesn't shade the house since its on the north side.  I also realize that the overgrown shrubs need to be removed.   Any thoughts on how to fix the asymmetrical look would be appreciated!

**Q: 60’s brick ranch needs some curb appeal** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello.I am looking for some advice to add some curb appeal to a 60s ranch that we just purchased. The house sits in a pocket neighborhood that is full of beautiful 20’s built craftsman bungalows and tudors, I don’t know if it’s best to try and conform to that or if it’s ok to embrace the mcm look. It’s definitely the ugly duckling on the block. 
I plan to remove overgrown landscaping. Looking for advice on style of garage door, trim color (soffit, gutters and fascia), roof color, and any other ideas to give the house some characater. Thanks ahead of time for all opinions.

**Q: Curb appeal suggestions** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We recently took a half story off our house and added a full second story. We resided the house and redid the front vestibule. This spring we will add landscaping with shrubs and flowers. What can we do to add some personality? Would shutters look good on all front windows? Should shutters on smaller lower level windows be the same size as upper large window? Note there isn’t much room on lower windows for wide shutters. Any color suggestions for the shutters? How would white window boxes look on lower level windows? Planning to keep the front entry white. Would another color look better? I appreciate any help!
