## Community Q&A

**Q: In desperate need of some curb appeal** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We recently bought a duplex (both sides) and the exterior is BORING! We have a limited budget because we need to replace gutters and redo the horribly cracked deck, but something needs to be done with the front. We debated painting the house in the next couple of years, but aren't sure because the aluminum siding is dented (hail?), so this may not be worth the time and money. We do plan to repaint the shutters and the front porch siding, but even this won't change it enough to make it not bland. Our color preferences are cool blues and grays. I've tried browsing on here and Pinterst for ideas, but that hasn't been helpful because every example house has some sort of interesting architectural detail whereas I only have a box to work with.
Any ideas? I am decent at DIY, but I'm at a loss for what to do.
(The grass looks better now than it did in the second photo, we are working on that)
We also do need the storm doors for airflow because we can't open the front windows and there aren't any side windows in the front of the house.

A: When you are changing out the siding on the front you could put a shallow gable over the porch and add a column on each end and a little railing would make it feel more like a porch. Then change the siding in the gable you created. That's an idea to do when residing the front because the roof would cost a little. The posts and railing could be put in now and remove the thin wrought iron rails with something thicker that is more visible. Have fun!!

**Q: The Front of This House is Hideous. Help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are about to put an offer on this house, but I am really caught up on the way the front looks. The windows are weird, the color is bad, and I can't even look at the cheesy brick posts. 
I'm coming up short on ways to fix this house that doesn't offer much inspiration. Any ideas? Or references?

A: I think it looks off because the 2 windows are offset in the gable. If this is really bothering you you could see if the left window could be moved farther to the left and then have a false gable built over the 2 windows and then change the siding on the new smaller gable and even around the windows so it would look like a cantilever.
