In fact, we have always enjoyed years of working with the same vendors repeatedly. For this project, a relatively small one involving putting up some drywall and hanging doors, along with building some benches and a table, etc., we needed a finishing carpenter and wanted to support a small local business. Nazarian Painting has many terrific reviews online and was being heavily promoted on a local social media, so we decided to work with them. What ensued was a Jekyll and Hyde experience. The carpenter we worked with was excellent and showed up on time, finished his carefully crafted work in a timely manner and cleaned up everything when he was completed. Working with Shane Nazarian was unfortunately the complete opposite. At first, he was communicative and helpful, but unfortunately, that changed very quickly as it became clear that other jobs he felt were a greater priority demanded his attention. In addition to showing up periodically, often hours after he was expected, the workmanship was incredibly unprofessional, with walls left with huge lumps of unsanded patches, and every drywalled corner looking like crumpled up clay. The painting was splotchy and uneven. Hardened wood filler was left clumped in gobs all over our heaters, requiring hours of scraping. We had to hire another contractor to repair all of the damage done to our walls - it is worth noting that this contractor thought it was so amateurish that he gently asked if we had taken a go at doing our own home repair - and a dozen bags of trash and building materials were left in our garage for a period of over three weeks, at which point Shane was completely unreachable. The final straw was that we had asked for a small table to be built for a dining room nook, and it was made the wrong size despite many many conversations about the dimensions (the regular carpenter was not the one who made it). It was delivered completely chopped up, with unsanded sides, and splotchy and dripping stain. The table base was great, having been made by the carpenter we like, but the table top also had to be taken apart and completely redone by another vendor. This job ended up being about 8 weeks over schedule and $1000 over budget, which we know happens. What we did not appreciate was how we were made to feel, which is that our job was an afterthought and we were being unreasonable by asking for items to be corrected. I have to underline that the work was incredibly sub-par, and asking it to made right should be a given. I hope that Nazarian Painting takes the time to iron out the struggles of small business - scheduling, staffing, and establishing a professional working relationship with customers - so that they can establish themselves going forward. **Comment from Topcoat:** > While i'm sorry that we did not meet your expectations (though these particular ones were not discussed at the time of contracting the work) I want to assure you that the carpenter who built the table, the same one that built the base and did all of the work in your house that you stated you were happy with, has been let go due to his reassurance that you were satisfied with the table when he left which was obviously him avoiding telling me that you were unhappy with it. We did our best to accommodate very unconventional and difficult work arrangements that were not put forward at the time of the initial meetings. When you requested additional non-contracted adjustments be made to the design without discussing them with me and i told you they would be an additional cost, you refused to pay. Every attempt was made to give you what you requested even if it was beyond what you were willing to pay for. If you had positive experiences with previous vendors, including my competitors, it would have been wise to use them again instead of seeking out a new company.
