## About

### Houzz Badges

- 1,000 Ideabook Saves

Principal Emeritus Bruce Coldham, AIA established his architectural practice in 1989. Ten years later, he was joined by Thomas Hartman, AIA, and together, they formed Coldham&Hartman Architects, with the goal of providing Architectural Services that push the envelope of sustainable building in the Pioneer Valley and beyond.

As changing building codes continue to improve standards for energy performance, our office has maintained its credentials as a leader in sustainable building through our commitment to creative problem solving and relentless attention to detail. Our deep understanding of complex building systems enables us to effectively integrate the elements that create a high performance enclosure. C&H has over two decades of experience finding solutions for difficult building science problems. We pride ourselves on our insistence that the results be elegant as well as innovative. The best testament to our success is our high number of repeat clients and word-of-mouth referrals.

From our first meeting on a new project, through blower door testing at substantial completion, designing buildings and systems that are sustainable for the people who use them and the environment is not an add-on to our service or a department at our firm, it’s the core of our practice. That’s why we at C&H feel it evokes our deepest principals when we say that we Design for the Next 100 Years.

## Selected projects

- [Contemporary Waterfront Home](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/contemporary-waterfront-home-pj-vj~2186807)
 - Location: Not specified

 - Description: This is a high performance waterfront home with expansive 180 degree views of the coastline. Built on an existing foundation to reduce site impact and cost, the home will feature a super insulated envelope including triple pane windows and durable metal siding and roof. The home is a modest size for the area, yet provides four bedrooms and bathrooms, a large open plan living, dining and kitchen area, and ocean view screen porch. The project also features a rainwater collection system for irrigat…
- [Log Cabin Transformation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/log-cabin-transformation-pj-vj~2940183)
 - Location: Sandisfield, MA
 - Photos: 10
 - Description: This house was bought in 2016 by a young couple with children, striking out into the wilds of the Berkshires. The original structure, like its log home predecessors, was an inward-looking space. They engaged our firm to reinvent the space and set them on a course to low-energy (net-zero) living — the primary architectural goal being to bring light and view into a dark space, while still maintaining the coziness and character of the log home that attracted them originally. Light (and contrast): D…

- [Modern Residence/Music Studio](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/modern-residence-music-studio-pj-vj~65849)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 9
 - Description: Owners and architect worked together closely to create a structure with clean contemporary lines, Asian-influenced design elements, and a modernist look. In concrete and steel, with a shallow butterfly roof, the structure uses modern building materials inside and out, and deliberately breaks from traditional residential materials and design. - [Hadley Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/hadley-residence-pj-vj~70993)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 15
 - Description: A new home for two, generating four times more electricity than it uses, including the "fuel" for an electric car. This house makes Net Zero look like child's play. But while the 22kW roof-mounted system is impressive, it's not all about the PV. The design features great energy savings in its careful siting to maximize passive solar considerations such as natural heating and daylighting. Roof overhangs are sized to limit direct sun in the hot summer and to invite the sun during the cold winter m…
- [Mountain Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mountain-residence-pj-vj~2180157)

- [Mill Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mill-renovation-pj-vj~65837)
 - Location: Not specified
 - Photos: 10
 - Description: We were able to create 60 comfortable, energy-efficient, well-lit units with great views of the Merrimack River, the mills, and the downtown area. There are community features designed into each floor with bright corridors and entry alcoves with benches at every unit. While the renovation is thoroughly modern, the history of the building is alive at every turn -- interior colors were chosen from fabric sample cards found in the existing mill and the floors still show the marks of where mill equi…
