Thanks! A: Pick up a few 2' x 2' squares of sheetrock and the small bagged paint samples. Paint the sheetrock one color front, another on back. You will have a fairly large example of the color to place on the wall and view in the same light. Paints look different in sunlight, fluorescent, etc. I am a Realtor, not a designer. But when I have clients choosing materials for a new home build I always ask the designer to take their samples over near a window. The change in perceived color can be surprising. Using a large paint sample on wall material gives you a good idea how the room will look. You can also leave the sample up for a few days to make sure. Good luck! **Q: 1978 Called--What to do with wood paneling??** *(in Design Dilemma)* I need some advice. We bought a great house that time forgot in 1978. This is the den, but we'll be using it as our primary living space. So far, we have had the ceilings scraped of popcorn and repainted white. At this point, I'd like to paint the paneling and keep the ceiling beams. I'm not sure what on earth to do with those crazy side beams or bulkheads or whatever you would call them. I don't think we can remove them, at this point. Do we paint them too? Also, we aren't replacing the flooring at this time. I want new kitchen counters more than new floors, at this point. My thought is to paint the panels a nice shade of white? Husband wants to paint the trim parts a contrasting color or leave them as they are. The fire place is natural stone and I don't hate it. I actually like it and think it might not seem so dark once we paint the paneling. Here are pictures! They were taken prior to the ceilings being finished. A: 50's came back in style 60's came back in style Will the 70's? **Q: Need exterior color scheme and curb appeal for ranch-style home** *(in Design Dilemma)* We're buying a home perched on a mountain with incredible lake views. My dilemma is the exterior. It is a basic ranch style house in need of curb appeal. My taste leans toward white farmhouses with metal roofs, black shutters, and black or aqua front doors. The two small bathroom windows are set in framed columns and the window 'trim' around them is just painted on. The arbor is not to my taste but the wood posts are set directly in the concrete patio so removal would create another problem. In terms of color, I would prefer a warm grey but I don't mind the main house color (plus hubby doesn't want to spend the $ to paint when it doesn't need it). However, I really dislike the muddy trim color and door color. I also don't care for the concrete patio color/style or flagstone porch step, and the palm trees just don't make sense in the Northern California mountains. I appreciate any suggestions. A: There's a house in this view? I would be so focused out back I'd be looking around, over, and past the house. Which is not a bad thing! Amazing view. **Q: The Front of This House is Hideous. Help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are about to put an offer on this house, but I am really caught up on the way the front looks. The windows are weird, the color is bad, and I can't even look at the cheesy brick posts. I'm coming up short on ways to fix this house that doesn't offer much inspiration. Any ideas? Or references? Need recliner suggestions** *(in Design Dilemma)* In a small sunny nook that's open to our kitchen and dining room we have a TV above a fireplace, that's hard (on our necks and my back) to watch unless we're leaning way back, and I think recliners would be easier on us. These purple recliners (from a family member) are available if we pay shipping - about $700 for both. I'm about to reno my kitchen including floors in the nook, and have no idea yet what the kitchen reno will look like. It will affect the entire first floor as all the rooms are open to each other. The idea is to go quite neutral so the focus will be on pottery, art, and some plants. Our home is small, 2 story, built in 1920, with stained glass windows, moldings, hardwood floors. Also the recliners need to be light enough for me to slide on the floor (with some felt attached) so I have room to do my yoga. I like the look of Belgian farmhouse. I'm not sure I can live with these purple recliners. Although I don't mind purple I'm not used to seeing it every day, and I'm afraid it will throw off the neutral plan I have. Maybe I need more guidance on how to work with purple. They don't look so bad in the white setting below, but my floors in the nook and kitchen will be tiled... not sure what yet, but they are adjacent to medium brown hardwood floors in the DR/LR.. I really need suggestions for lighter recliners than the heavy boxy traditional ones. I can't afford the gorgeous leather and wood Eames recliner and footstool, or the Stressless brand, so am looking for suggestions that are less expensive but that will look good. I need to let the shipping company know in the next few days as the condo has been sold. Any help would be much appreciated. We live in Toronto, Ontario Canada A: I picked up 2 Poang chairs on Craigslist for $40 because I had a place in my home office and had not found what I really wanted. What started out as my "cheap used Ikea chairs" in my mind has become my "comfortable spot" for working on my iPad. My wife took the second chair for her home office. The Poang makes a great placeholder chair, is a lot less than $700, and might fit you so well it becomes the permanent solution. And you might choose a wood tone that matches the wood floors well enough to tie it together. **Q: Outdoor curb appeal and furniture advice wanted!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, We moved into our new to us 30 year old contemporary style home in southeastern PA (zone 7) last fall. (Myself and my husband (30ish) and 2 year old son) I am looking for advice at this point mainly on any simple curb appeal upgrades for the front of the house. Especially door color- I was thinking maybe red or should I stick with navy? Even if I keep the door color the same as it is it will need to be repainted due to condition. Also looking for furniture ideas and easy to maintain plants that would do well in the shade in zone 7. p.s.- these photos are from the listing as the current backdrop would be leafless trees, we have since added white gutters w/leaf guards to the house!
