Ken was very precise in letting us know exactly what to expect concerning delivery time, amount of space we’d need to store the delivered flooring, time we needed to let it sit in the house before installation (we live in Arizona where it’s very dry). One of our requirements is that we wanted flooring sourced from and made in the U.S. Finding a quality product in a multi-toned and hewned finish that also offerred a random width option turned out to be an arduous task. When we stumbled across Uptown Floors, spoke with Ken and received a sample of the flooring, we knew we had found everything we were looking for. We live in Wisconsin, and the Uptown Flooring almost seemed to good to be true after all the searching we had done. I'm not going to lie and say that we weren't hesitant to place such an expensive order on-line without being able to walk into a store and talk to someone face to face with knowledge on the product or to get a first hand account from people that we new and trusted that had installed the flooring. Delivery day was a highly anticipated day and we were incredibly relieved to see the quality of the product. It's absolutely beautiful flooring!!! We shared samples with a few flooring store owners we were dealing with and they all commented about what a high quality product it appeared to be - some even wanted to find out if/how they could distribute Ken's flooring. Even the stair handrail, which was not a custom design but rather a profile that we picked from a list provided by Ken, was incorrect. The lack of quality control and verification with orders is surprising. When we reported all of the issues with our order, Ken only grew frustrated with the situation and refunded us, not offering to provide replacement material. This will cost us weeks of delays and thousands in extra costs as we search for another fabricator for the stairs. You should look elsewhere if you want to work with someone that actually cares about helping you finish your project. > > Update: > Uptown Floors did provide an extra refund to help with some of the costs associated with our delays, which is appreciated. My suggestion at the time was to finalize the treads within two weeks. Several unusual/non standard design ideas were passed back and forth along with other new components. It was at this time I suggested using a local stair builder and I could supply the same stain color used for the flooring where it could be finished on site. We had several installers ask where we got the floors from because they were amazed by the high quality. We installed the floors ourselves and were so please at how precise each board was. The finish is so beautiful and has held up incredibly well. We do not have pets but many visitors do not remove their shoes and I’ve dropped things but there is no evidence of scratches or indentations. The finish has a satin look which I really love. The dumbing down of the internet. **Q: Newly installed white oak wood floors are cracked** *(in Home Repair)* I live in a condo building. In the last 2 months I had installed 5 inch-wide unfished engineered wood floors (water-stained) throughout the 1400 square foot condo by a flooring contractor. The first few weeks I was euphoric until a week ago. In the last 7 days I already have 27 cracks going length-wise in the planks . Some cracks are 5-9 inches but many of them are over 12 inches. When I hear a popping/cracking noise, I go on the hunt for the cracks. I found 2 under my bed. They are in the hallways. In the kitchen. In the dining area. In the living room. In some places when I walk on the planks I can hear the floor making a very subtle crackly sound. I look down and nothing is cracked there yet. The beautiful color overall is medium to lighter shades. A few of the planks I have noticed are getting much lighter in color too (very blonde). The cracks are devastating. I have heard humidity should be a certain level and I might be short there. But my entire building has wood floors, as I did previously too, and no one including myself has ever complained about cracked wood floors. Do you think the wood is defective? How common is this? Lot's of folks with basic information, repeated. 'Experts' after doing their first floor. Some just plain bored gardeners or whatever gabbing away. Finish has nothing to do with it. Those with with industry experience day in and day out can spot an issue without doubts when it comes to lack of or excessive moisture in the environment. **Q: Hardwood flooring options for tiny house.** *(in Flooring)* I am looking to replace my hardwood floors. have educated myself on the difference between engineered and solid wood. Good with engineered if the wear layer is thick. Biggest issue is that the trend is super wide planks and its hard to find the narrower stuff. My house is tiny. entire house is 720 sf. 2 bedrooms. think cottage. Does anyone have experience with the larger planks in a smaller house? A: Super wide? Yea, I see the decorator ideas. They love to experiment. There's some narrow engineered hardwoods out there. Not gonna find them in retail stores as they're stuck on imported wide plank they get for cheap and mark 'em up to the moon. How's this look? 3/4" x 3 1/4" engineered.
