## Community Q&A

**Q: Black and white floors in a tiny kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'd love a black and white floor, maybe checkerboard pattern, in my small 8x12 foot kitchen. But the designer at my local flooring store says it will make my kitchen look even smaller. I'm going for a vintage, cottage look, replacing cream cabinets with white IKEA bead board ones, a white quartz countertop, white subway tile backsplash with grey grout and white appliances. Black under mount sink, black hardware. Should I go with my black and white floor idea or something else? Here is a 'before' picture.

A: The black and white tile may be out of scale with your kitchen. A larger pattern needs a larger space or it will look truncated. I suggest a mock up of the flooring. Places tiles on the floor or cut paper to the appropriate size and tape to the floor. You can also draw the room to scale (e.g., 1"=1'-0") with the floor pattern. The main thing to remember is, this is your kitchen. If you like it, go for it!
