I knew I needed motorized shades as the upper shades were over 13' in the air and would have been difficult to open and close. I also did not want to have to hire a costly electrician to run power to each of the windows. After questioning me to find out my requirements, Stacy directed me to Hunter Douglas Sonnettes. They work like a roller shade but are actually 2 layers to provide more insulation to help save energy. The battery packs were moved down to the floor behind my couch so they are easy to replace/charge as necessary. When Tom came out to install the shades, he was very patient with me as we looked at the different options on how to position the batteries. He then set up the Hub so that in addition to the remote, I can control the shades from my phone. It was so easy to set up different scenes (all shades up, all shades down, etc). After looking at hundreds of fabric samples, I think I have narrowed my decision to these two fabrics. The darker beige/brown creates more contrast, while the lighter beige/camel is more monochromatic look and a shade darker than my SW stucco paint color which is throughout most of the living space here. I do have a brown sunroom open to the living room with an oatmeal colored couch- very light. Any help us appreciated! A: I thought the darker as well, then I thought darker might make the room feel smaller where the lighter one would blend in more with the rug. You can contrast and add color with pillows and throws easily enough. **Q: Hunter Douglas vs Budget Blinds vs Home Depot vs the Shade Co** *(in Home Decorating)* Was curious how people would rank these providers for roller blinds? Price difference is not that much since my apartment is small. TYIA A: I think it depends on what features are most important to you. Here at Creative Windows we carry Graber, Hunter Douglas, Alta, plus we manufacture our own roller shades in house. My experience with Hunter Douglas roller shades is that they have beautiful fabric options, and Poweriew motorization is pretty easy to use. We have customers come in from time to time that purchased treatments at big box stores and when something goes wrong homeowners have trouble getting anyone there to help them. Hunter Douglas, Graber, or Alta dealers that are small businesses usually excel on the customer service. Good luck! **Q: Ideas for Mounting Motorized Shades** *(in Home Decorating)* Looking for suggestions on how and where to mount motorized shades for our son's condo. The living area has wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling windows, as shown in photos below: He'd like to get some motorized shades for privacy and solar control. One approach would be to have individual shades for each window. In that case, he'd mount the shade inside the window frame - but that leads to a lot of shades with the associated high cost. Another approach is to have one shade for every two windows. In this case, we'd have to mount the shade externally, to one of the three surfaces shown below: Surface A is the window frame, and is probably the safest to attach the shades to. Surface B is some kind of a cover or trim piece, so I don't know what's behind it or if it can support the weight of the shade. Surface C is drywall - I'm not sure what's behind it or if it can support the shades; it sounded pretty hollow when I tapped on it. It also would place the shade further away from the window. So I'm thinking that Surface A is best - is that what's commonly used for mounting? Also, what are some sources to buy shades for a DIY installation? A: If you mount to surface "A" you'll have a privacy gap on the sides where there is nothing to bridge the gap between the shade cloth and the edge of the window opening. The gap would be directly over glass. **Q: Arrgh! Need help deciding on color for LR drapes!** *(in Home Decorating)* We are slowly but surely furnishing our vacation home on the Florida Gulf Coast. Now we're ready to pick living/dining area window treatments. Venetian blinds are already there, so we're planning on drapes, both for ease of selection and installation and to cut down on echoes from the tile floor and open floor plan. The room faces north on the big window and east on the side windows, so blackout drapes aren't needed. Walls are SW Panda White and the two side chairs will be replaced in the future, as well as maybe the lamps, or at least the one on the left. Mainly we need drapes for privacy (so we don't have to mess with the venetian blinds all the time) and to finish off the windows, style-wise. The dilemma is, what color? We had thought blue, but when we brought home several possibilities in different blue shades, I thought it seemed like too much blue altogether, while my husband liked a medium indigo shade. So if not blue, what?? Also, should the dining room window have the same drapes, or could we do something different there? Thanks for your insights! A: How about a blue or coral tone on tone textural fabric for drapery. **Q: Help with window treatment and furniture for odd window configuration** *(in Windows)* What should I do to dress these windows? All I can think of is floor length drapes and sheers but I’m afraid of creating a dated look. I’m going to add crown molding and paint will be a warmer antique white. A: Great ideas. I was going to suggest treating the two larger windows as one and doing roller shades or Roman shades. Then you could do one valance or cornice above them to visually group them as one. I like the trim idea, though. **Q: Help with 4 close windows.** *(in Design Dilemma)* We bought am old park model as a vacation home. All the furniture has been taken out and walls painted griege. The windows have me stumped. Right now they have white wood blinds. I can't really hang false drapes high and wide as there's no room, although I like that look. Those short cream curtains are gone!! It's not fancy like some homes on here but we are working at it! Would false panels on each end look ok? Help!! Pic is how it looked when we bought it. A: Hi there! I could definitely see stationary panels on the sides. Rather than have them just above the lower windows, you could have them go up to, or close to, the crown moulding. For the side window, rather than the short panels they had before, I'd keep the same length on that window as well.
