Is there anything wrong with flipping that and doing dark perimeter cabinets and light Island? A: There’s absolutely nothing “wrong” with flipping it. It’s really about balance and how the room feels. Dark perimeter cabinets will visually anchor the space and can feel rich and dramatic. However, they’ll also make the walls feel heavier, especially if the kitchen doesn’t get a ton of natural light. A lighter island in the center can be beautiful and feel like a piece of furniture, but it won’t offset darkness the same way a light perimeter does. A few things to consider: • How much natural light does the room get? • Ceiling height • Countertop color (contrast matters a lot here) • Overall vibe — cozy and moody vs. light and airy If it were my project, I’d only go dark on the perimeter if the space has good lighting and enough contrast in countertops/backsplash to keep it from feeling closed in. One reason the lighter perimeter/darker island combo is popular is because it visually expands the room. Either way can work! This is an open-concept space and this wall is the first thing you see as you enter the floor.
