With Nicholas, from the very first contact he was attentive, communicative, and did what he said he was going to do. Our first meeting I took without my wife due to a conflict, and afterwards I confidently told my wife, “I think you are really going to like him.” Nicholas came back, we had another meeting—and I was right. What I love most about our complete renovation is the totally remodeled kitchen and updated coffee bar that opens up the space! Nicholas also completely changed our stairs and they are perfect! I had an idea of painting the banisters, and he was great about showing AI pictures so that I was able to visualize that I had enough blue. The molding around my doors came out terrific, he had a great architectural eye, and also for issues that came up with vendors; he made sure everything that we ended up with in our home was something he could be proud of. Our upstairs master bath is a good example. His opinion on using mirrors made by our custom kitchen cabinetry group (Stylecraft) and matching our bathroom cabinetry made the room look fabulous! He has great subcontractors that were always clean, polite, showed up on time and did a great job! I think the stone fabricator mishandled the waterfall. If you look at the attached photo, you can see that the front edge of the stone waterfall slab does not approach the floor at a 90 degree angle. Instead, the front edge of the waterfall slants inward and is therefore not parallel with the front face of my kitchen cabinets. This leaves the bottom side of the cabinet behind the waterfall exposed when viewed from the side. In my view this waterfall was not correctly fabricated. The front side edge should have formed a straight line parallel to the face of the kitchen drawers so that the waterfall would fully cover the cabinets behind it all the way to floor. What are your thoughts? Do you think that the fabricator made an error here that would justify for me to ask them to purchase a new stone and redo the waterfall element? A: @Clay Mitchell, you’re right to be concerned. The waterfall edge shouldn’t be slanting like that. It’s supposed to drop straight down at a 90-degree angle and line up with the cabinet face so everything looks clean and intentional. When it angles inward like this, it exposes the base and throws off the design. From what I can see, this looks like either a fabrication or install issue. Maybe a bad miter cut or it wasn’t clamped square during assembly. Either way, it’s not how a waterfall edge is supposed to look unless that slope was specifically part of the design, which I doubt in this case. If your layout and specs were clear, I’d say you’re well within reason to ask them to redo it, ideally at their cost. The material looks great, but the execution doesn’t do it justice. Do nothing and ask for compensation? How much? B. Have them cut the edge back by a quarter inch so it has less of an overhang. C. We are planning on buying the counter-depth Samsung 4-door flex refrigerator, which happens to have quite a thick door - about 4 inches. We had been hoping to make it blend in with the cabinets and have it be as close to flush as possible with the wall of cabinets in either side. We have a cabinet maker so have some flexibility with what we can do. If we want to have the door open we need about 3-4” of space on either side. He is suggesting that we use filler millwork on either side, 4” recessed so that the doors open and it gives the whole wall a streamlined look. I have researched what to do with counter depth refrigerators and am completely swirly now. I’m attaching the drawing he sent me - this is from the top down. On the right side of the fridge are 3-15” pantry units. On the left side will be lower drawers and upper open shelving. You can see how the filler panels sit flush with the fridge body to allow the doors to open. We have a small kitchen and will have an island that sits in front of much of the fridge; and it is tight, maybe 30-35”, not enough room to push the island either. Thoughts? Advice? In tight layouts like yours, we’ve seen this situation many times. Since the wall on the right side is fixed at 24 ½” due to the door opening, it does limit your options for a full-depth panel there. If you were to add a standard-depth panel to cover the grey box of the fridge, yes, it would project past the wall and interrupt the clean visual line at the kitchen entrance. Here are a couple options we typically recommend: Skip the right panel and leave the 1 ½” of fridge exposed, especially if it’s not directly visible from the main kitchen view. It’s a subtle tradeoff that most people won’t notice once everything is installed. Reduce the wall depth behind the fridge by about an inch, if possible. We’ve done this on several projects where gaining even 1” allows the fridge to sit further back and align more cleanly with adjacent cabinetry. It’s a bit of extra work, but the visual payoff can be worth it. Ultimately, there’s no perfect solution with a fixed wall depth like that, but choosing the cleanest look for your sightline and functionality usually works out well. We chose a 6 by 36 inch porcelain light tan wood look tile for the shower walls and ceiling - and a dark blue mosaic tile for the shower floor to complement our blue and brown granite. Problem: we didn't focus on the shower tile edges where the walls will meet the shower door, nor the tile edges for the soap/shampoo recesses. Now as the tiling is starting, the guys asked what we planned for the tile edges, and said they recommend metal trim? I'd never heard of it before, and have been trying to get up to speed on Schluter, jolly, etc. etc. We have worked hard to have a rustic look in the master bath with cathedral ceiling, beams, pine walls and ceiling, wood plank flooring, etc. To my mind, sifting through pictures, the metal trim can be ugly and way too contemporary for our look. But there is no bull nose or corner piece option with our wood plank tile. I see that Schluter makes some colored aluminum options - there are some textured brown/tan tone ones that might fade into the background a bit next to our wood plank tile. I would have spent time carefully researching, but wasn't aware of the issue until now as they start tiling, so we're in a time crunch. Thoughts?? TIA!! A: Hi JAB, we ran into the same issue on a recent project using wood-look tile in a rustic coastal home. Since there wasn’t a bullnose option, we went with brushed nickel Schluter trim. The photo shows how it turned out once everything was grouted, with clean lines that don’t distract from the tile or the overall look. If you’re going for a more natural finish, I’d suggest choosing a trim that tones well with your fixtures or hardware.
