Designing spaces that have flow and interest has been something I have been doing since I was big enough to push my bedroom furniture around. Design school seemed like a perfect chance to enhance all the things that I loved doing.

I am a northern Alberta girl and received my interior design technologist diploma in 1993 from NAIT. I’ve had great opportunities from Edmonton, Red Deer and now 20 years in Calgary to learn and grow my design skills, contacts and knowledge…sometimes through the school of “Hard Knocks” however 25+ years later in the industry and 10 years on my own have been taught me so much.

I’m not a Foo-Foo designer (as I have been asked many times) and I’m not looking to impose my design likes on your home. I’m a designer that will work with you to create a space that is functional and that expresses your style. A place that makes you want to come home and that you can be inspired in.

I am also a Feng Shui Practitioner through Mount Royal College and love looking at the energy flow in homes. Ok, maybe that now sounds Foo-Foo but know that I want your home to “feel” good and that what we put into it needs to have purpose and not be clutter.

Over the years the design process has evolved and our newest products are “Design Packages” for projects, such as kitchen designs or a selection package for a bathroom. This allows a clear picture as to what is included and how we work together.

Below is a brief list of services offered to clients in the Calgary area:

New Home construction and renovation designs - Space planning and design, selections for everything from flooring to light fixtures.

Colour Consultation - Selection of paint colours for walls, trim, cabinetry etc.

Furniture and Decor - I work with trade only suppliers as well as retailers to specify furniture pieces and finishing accessories, provide layouts and fabric selections

3-D Room Design - Full colour 3-d renderings for individual rooms and full home interiors.

Kitchen and Bath Design - From full 3-d renderings and working drawings to cabinetry finish selections.

Window Coverings - I offer quality window coverings to my clients. In addition to window blinds, I also provide custom drapery treatments and drapery hardware for the added finishing touch.

**★★★★★ — L & E Whitehead, March 2018**

> We worked with Velvet on what became a major renovation to our newly purchased 17 year old condo. Being usually indecisive and overwhelmed by the numerous product choices available, Velvet took us by the hand and led us through the whole process. She quickly realized our desires, likes and dislikes, and was able to narrow down the product choices for us which sped up the decision making process. A few times she did try to nudge us out of our comfort zone, succeeding the odd time. In those instances we are very happy with the outcome. Velvet was very professional and fun to work with. She made the whole process less tedious than we had envisioned and feared. We are extremely happy with the end result of the project.

**Comment from Little Red Door Inc.:**

> Thanks so much Lee and Ella! It was such fun getting to know you both and to update your new home! I think you did great and thanks for letting me nudge you. Haha!

**★★★★★ — Richard Gray, March 2018**

> Working with Velvet was a real pleasure. She listened carefully to our needs and helped design a whole home renovation that really met our needs. She was there every step of the way to help choose products, design room layouts and choose a complementary colour and texture palette that really fit with our vision. As a good designer should do she also challenged us and made us think of some unconventional elements that really made our final project stand out. We worked with her start to finish on a whole home renovation and couldn’t be happier with the final result. So many of the compliments we get are tied to choices that Velvet helped us with!

**Comment from Little Red Door Inc.:**

> Thanks so much Richard! Loved working with you and your family. Hopefully that fantastic mudroom (that started this project) has made your life easier!

**★★★★★ — Laura Stinton, Sept. 2017**

> Velvet is a pleasure to work with!! She is professional and fun. She has an amazing ability to focus on the little details while at the same time seeing the big picture. She is organized and efficient. We worked on a very large project with her and enjoyed every step of the process. I would highly recommend her.

**Comment from Little Red Door Inc.:**

> Thanks so much Laura! It has been such fun getting to know your family.

## Community Q&A

**Q: love the backsplash** *(in Photo Questions)*

Could you tell me what is the backsplash?

A: Hello! This project was completed in 2016 so the product may no longer be available however it was an Tierra Sol, London Grey Matte, 2.5x10 Flat Wall Tile - Matte
TSCWTTWLG210M. https://www.tierrasol.ca/monokini-series Glad you loved it!

**Q: Dining Room lighting** *(in Lighting)*

We just put recessed lighting in our dining room and kitchen we are looking to update the chandelier and get a new pendant lighting over the breakfast bar or should we stick with these or get two larger lights over the breakfast bar any suggestions are welcome

A: Hi Lindsay! I'm sure you notice a huge difference with the added recessed lights! Not sure if you put them on dimmers as this can help create a bit more mood when they are dimmed down. I would update the chandelier and pendants. Going to something more glass and metal to make the space feel more visually open. I find the colored glass and raised breakfast bar start to feel like a wall between spaces.

**Q: Size of baseboards?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have a 1995 home - that has Princeton trim in honey oak. A couple years ago we refaced our kitchen cabinets in natural cherry.
Now we have had hail damage and are getting 7 new windows installed with SW alabaster white trim - the new casing profile matches our current door and window casings - \#366 - 1/2 inch x 2.25 inches. I am trying to decide if we should replace our baseboards before we paint everything Alabaster or just leave everything as is. Our current baseboards are \#634 - 7/16 inch by 2.75 inches.
I am such a visual person that I can't decide. Would replacing the 2.75 inch with 5.25 inch that looks very similar to the profile we have now be proportionally OK? Our main floor is 9 foot ceilings and our upstairs bedroom floor have 8 foot ceilings. I really don't want to go to the expense and time to replace window and door casings but am wondering if the taller baseboards would be a good updated look. Thank you for giving me some insight into my indecisiveness.

A: I think it's the right size!

**Q: Help! Dining Room** *(in Home Decorating)*

I need some serious help with my dining room. I do not even know where to begin. We moved in 2 months ago and I am going nuts over how to decorate this room. I am going for Modern Farmhouse decor. The dining table will stay however everything else can be changed. Thank you!

A: Yes, I also agree that your chest is too big and it looks more mid-century than farmhouse. I agree with the items that @homechef59. The rug looks like it would work. The light fixture needs to be changed out for sure. Its not a good scale for your table and the style doesn't match your farm house love.

**Q: HI velvet What is the floorings this photo? Very nice** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Grandeberg, This is a wire brushed white oak floor called "Louis XIV Castillon White Oak". Gorgeous!

**Q: Rug on screened porch? Suggestions please!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I love our screened porch, even in gloomy February. While I'm happy with the furniture and the space, I keep wondering if I should add an area rug. Will it impede the easy movement of furniture? (Right now we flip the chairs around to face the sofa when we have a group over.) Will it detract from the view, including the (summertime) wildflower garden below and the little mini lake across? (This porch connects directly to our kitchen via sliding doors.) Will it conflict with the rest of our Scandinavian modern home (the porch furniture was brought from our former house, and we love it, but it is definitely not Scandinavian modern). On the positive side, would it bring the room together? What would you recommend for size/color/pattern? (Note, during warmer months, we do warm the space up with plants, etc.)

A: That view is dreamy! I would put an area rug in the section that seems to have the sofa and coffee table and leave the two side chairs on their own. A indoor/outdoor carpet are best for this space as the fabric tends to be better when weather is added into the mix. The indoor/outdoor carpets tend to be light and easy to move, I don't think it would impede the moving of the furniture but that depends on what you're actually moving around. :)
