> Bates Design Associates remodeled two bathrooms, as well as painted and carpeted the upstairs of my home. The two bathrooms were both older and needed new tile, counter tops, fixtures, faucets and decor. Kim helped me to select tile and marble counter tops that brought the house up-to-date and that were much more in keeping with the overall style of our home. She also helped select paint colors and a carpet color that all worked together. Her contractors were wonderful and got everything done on-time and in budget. We also added items on during the remodel (such as new doors that needed to be stained to match the house) and those things were finished along with the rest of the work. We look forward to working with Bates Design again in the future!

> Can't say enough good things about working with Kim! She combines the best of her art (color, shape, balance etc) with all of the know-how necessary (materials, space planning, etc) to produce knockout interiors. We absolutely love how our house turned out. Plus she is so easy to work with. Even listened to my ideas. Really can't say enough good things . . . Ellen

> Kim Bates of Bates Design Associates is an excellent designer and exceptionally knowledgeable of details of fabrication of custom soft goods and window treatments. We have done workroom services for her for a number of projects and find the process very efficient because of her knowledge.

> Bates Design Associates, LLC, did an outstanding job designing our home. Kim Bates worked closely with us to determine our preferences for both exterior and interior design. Her suggestions and ideas helped create a distinctive home reflecting our personalities. Not only was it beautiful, but totally enjoyable and livable, from the rich wood floors and imported honed French stone tiles to the relaxed surroundings of the family room with its built-in 160 gallon salt water aquarium and wood burning fireplace with granite trim and hearth. We highly recommend Kim's work, and guarantee perfect satisfaction.

> I hired Bates Design to help me redo several rooms in my home. The designer listened to my needs for function, seamlessly blended her work into my personal style and kept me on budget -- plus the install was completed ahead of schedule! I would definitely use again and highly recommend!

## Community Q&A

**Q: Love the wall color!** *(in Photo Questions)*

Can you please tell me the name and brand of the color the walls are painted?
Thanks!

A: Hi Terry,
Isn't this a fun color? It is Sherwin Williams SW6832 Impulsive Purple. I used a flat finish and recommend that. Good luck with your project.
Kim

**Q: Grout Color Choice Regrets** *(in Remodeling)*

Last year, I got new tile flooring installed and after going back and forth for far too long on what grout color to use with my dark gray porcelain tile that was installed in a herringbone pattern, I finally decided to play it safe and I chose a charcoal gray, which blends in closely to the color of the tile.

However, now that I've lived with my decision for a while, I have realized that this grout choice has made my herringbone pattern almost disappear. I was so worried about going too dark or too light that I now think I made the worst decision of making it appear like there is no herringbone pattern now.

I've always heard that light or white grout always stains or gets dirty too easily, so I was scared away from it. Recently, I did a quick mockup of what the lighter gray grout would have looked like if I had chosen it and I think it looks so much better and shows off the pattern. But I also keep thinking, would I still be happy with how the light gray looks if keeping it clean was much more difficult?

What do you all think? Did I make the wrong choice? Does lighter grout always cause more issues eventually to make it not worth it? Do you like the grout color I chose or my mockup with the lighter grout more? Photos attached for reference.

A: I love what you chose! The design is subtle, but not lost. It is easier to keep the darker colors clean. Relax and enjoy your beautiful floor!

**Q: Tons of oak cabinets** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Can replace but would love to paint - white/light gray .. our room is silver song - there are A LOT of them too ... more gray cabinets bee too much gray?

A: I love the idea of painting them. I would take the color of gray from your island, step down one to two shades lighter and use that. That way it will look great together, but won't be an overwhelming amount of the same color. Good luck with your project!

**Q: Toilet Room Size** *(in Remodeling)*

I'm designing a toilet room with an inward-swinging door. Currently, the specified size is 36" x 72". Is this large enough to comfortably enter the room and use the toilet? The door pictured is 30". Would 28" be better?

The toilet is about 30" deep.

I've searched the forum for similar questions, but I can't find anything addressing the door position and swing.

Thanks!

A: This is appropriate spacing. The 30" door size works, but you won't lose much if you go with a 28" and it will give you a little more space to work around the commode. Good luck with your project!

**Q: Table between these two MCM chairs???** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I live in a mid century mod house, and just received these two 1959 custom chairs as a gift. That’s our gas fireplace behind them, and our clutter-covered Nakashima coffee table. My boyfriend and I disagree! I think a small brass cocktail table in between those chairs is needed. One with very little volume. He thinks not. Thoughts please?

A: You win! A nice brass side table would be perfect! (Fun chairs.)

**Q: Which size rug?** *(in Polls)*

I bought an 8 x 10, but I’m wondering if a 9 x 12 would look better?

NOTE: That blue chair in the corner is going to have a smaller Faux fur pelt under it and will overlso the area rug, with either size i get.

i have attached two pics. One pic of the current rug and another adding blankets similar in color to the rug, to attempt to show how it would look bigger.

Currently i have rug sitting as follows: about 1/3 under side curve part of couch, about 3/4s under the couch on the back longer part, and then it sticks out about 6 inches on The side near fireplace.

I can’t center the couch or the rug on my tv console which is partly why I’m throw off. With the way the room is, the couch and rug would be pulled to far back into then walk way to get to the back doors.

Also, i have no idea how far away the rug should be from the console.

Sooo Many questions haha - feedback greatly appreciated!

A: I think the 9x12 would be great. Good luck with your project!
