Starting the project was a bit shaky, some communication difficulties with our project manager and the site manager (which changed midway through our project). But the real issues arose with the final execution of the project. Our refrigerator & the panels were improperly installed as confirmed by GE, so every time we close or open the freezer drawer it damages the surrounding cabinets. Our brand-new dishwasher that they installed broke down and may be due to install issues, Bosch is still assessing the issue. Our garage was used as a staging spot as well as a woodworking studio, but there was no attempt to ensure our gym equipment which is housed in the garage was protected, which led to damage of our expensive belongings. The wood floors that were installed have damage including large dents, gaps and wood splintering. The painted walls have cracks and bubbles, despite drawing attention to these issues early on. We now have to bring in our own contractors to fix the many issues that Four Brothers left us with. > > My husband and I both attempted to contact Kent and Sondra who had been our main contact people at Four Brothers with no response. We are extremely frustrated and disappointed with a very costly project that left us with unnecessary headaches and messes to clean up. We had some idea of what we wanted, but were somewhat overwhelmed with the amount of potential choice. 4B quickly ascertained the amount of guidance we needed, and helped us make final choices efficiently. Only a few minor problems arose, which they quickly addressed. For example, we picked a flooring which turned out to be a bad color choice next to the wood floors in adjoining rooms. The construction process was quiet and very neat, which was an unexpected bonus.The whole team was a pleasure to work with, but we were particularly impressed with our creative architect (Kate Donahure) and our careful chief contractor (Jose Moreno), who was very careful and attentive to detail---and considerate as well. It is a compact space, about 4.5 ft. x 11.5 ft., with 10 ft. ceilings. This small space only underscored the need for a firm that could execute all the details perfectly, because there was no place to hide or fudge mistakes. Having dealt with two other design and build firms in the Washington, DC area when we renovated other areas of our house, we were wary of starting another project -- but with Four Brothers, there was no need for apprehension. Stuart Pumpelly, our Team Leader, initially met with us and guided us through the contract process -- and stayed with us throughout the renovation. And, we had superb Four Brothers personnel in Walid Kraydi, our Foreman, and Kate Hillman, our ace carpenter and project manager. Kate was on the job everyday -- and saw that all details were given attention. Simply put, she treated our renovation project as if it was being done in her house. All the subcontractors involved were excellent, both in terms of expertise and customer care. In short, Four Brothers assembled an outstanding team. The plan was developed by the Kohler Design Team, but Four Brothers managed the process, which was considerable, given all the details regarding plumbing fixtures, ceramic tile, and lighting involved in a 4.5'x11.5' space. Excellent communication was the key to getting the project done -- and Four Brothers delivered, with even one of the Johnson brothers, Kent, making occasional visits to see how the project was going. In conclusion, Four Brothers is an excellent design and build firm that delivers the goods and leaves the customer satisfied. I know that I am. Mike was senior on the project, came with a wealth of experience, and was definitely a huge value to have when he was here during the early phases of demo, plumbing relocation, HVAC work, floor leveling, framing, etc.. The rest of the project management was a little lacking and there was a fair amount of sloppiness with the work--including managing the subs. The Four Brothers team ultimately did a good job remedying our concerns, but it took a lot more of our time and oversight than we would have liked. > > Overall the subs they used were really great. The only group we had issues with were drywall + paint. A bunch of the drywall lines on brand new framed rooms were crooked and painting was sloppy including poor ceiling lines and paint on surrounding surfaces. They are brilliant designers, master craftsmen, keen listeners, and completely trustworthy managers. We hired Four Brothers for an extensive renovation, along with an addition, to our 1945 brick colonial. They made the design process a delight. They excepted nothing less than perfect in every facet of the construction. They came up with creative, and master craftsman ideas that we had never thought of to bring in natural light in every room, to vault a ceiling, to add a dormer so that we would feel as though we are outside when we are inside in almost every room in the house. We were focused on using principles of universal design to make our home beautiful and accessible for all generations, all abilities. So, Four Brothers created one step-less entry for us, and two specially designed step-less bathrooms. So brilliant and beautiful are these bathrooms, that we have had 15 requests for the floor plans, primarily because our neighbors want to incorporate these types of bathrooms into their own or their parents' homes. And speaking of bathrooms, our Four Brothers project team was not satisfied with the initial work of their tile subcontractor. So, unprompted by us, they tore out all the tile from each renovated bathroom and started over with a high end tile craftsman, all at their own internal expense. Needless to say, we trust Four Brothers for quality work. Two other features have provided us with a WOW factor that we love: 1) The rear of our home has a southern exposure, so to optimize it, Four Brothers created a 4-season sunroom, adjacent to a roofed outdoor porch (equipped with mosquito curtains), extending into an open (uncovered) porch (where the grill is) with a retractable awning. 2) The kitchen/family area has a real-brick backsplash created from reclaimed bricks from a Chicago warehouse that Four Brothers designers researched and found for us. People visiting simply cannot stop complimenting this beautifully warm kitchen backsplash design, a design which was key to the entire open area of our kitchen/family room. We are elated with our newly renovated home! We have already recommended Four Brothers to 12 families who have hired the company and are thrilled with the results. They arrived every morning on schedule. It is clear that the Four Brothers are master carpenters/craftsmen with old world skills and work ethic. The rest of the bedroom, bathroom and dressing room are a subtle shade of classic grey. The dressing room has uniform 8' wardrobe doors with long pulls masking interiors of shelves, drawers and hanging spaces of differing lengths. We now have two beautiful bathrooms that actually seem bigger and more spacious than their predecessors. Leroy Johnson really went into great detail looking at the property, making suggestions, talking about other jobs that he had done that were similar, talking about things that I should consider, etc. I got the impression that he was remodeling this house for a family member or a friend more than just a client that he had never met before. During the course of the actual project, Leroy also suggested other updates to the home, including upgrades to insulation and electrical systems. Throughout the job, which took months, I was always kept updated where they had delays, which were inevitable I think, and I was informed ahead of time so that they were not detrimental to my overall schedule. It involved structural, HVAC, electrical and painting/finishing. We are totally satisfied with the completion of the project. We are pleased with everything the company did on this project. We looked at a number of firms to do the renovation and we were impressed with Ben and his brothers from the outset. At every step along the way we found the whole team to be helpful, responsive and highly competent. The company has a very positive energy in its staff that made the whole project very easy. The designer's work and his suggestions for colors, flooring, and windows were good and helped us in the planning stages.
