## Community Q&A

**Q: Hideous front door--need help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

26 year old builder grade front door needs to go. Want to stick with same overall setup--half sidelites but open to some glass in the door, although not necessary. Looking at Provia Doors but not sure what design/style of door and what color will go with this medium brown brick. Not a fan of traditional look but house can't do too contemporary. Will also change shutter color or remove all together...also plan slate walkway/stoop.

please send your thoughts--thanks!

A: This is such a timeless, classic home! The least expensive way to update your front door is to paint it & change the door hardware. If you do want to replace it, I would suggest a stain or paint grade wood door with a light pattern to match the top sash of your windows. For example, you would need a half light front door with a 3 wide, 2 high light pattern. (Replacing just the door and not the sidelights.) If you are willing to replace the door & sidelights, you could go with full light door or 3/4 light door with grill pattern to match existing windows and full light side lights. Depending on the size, you could also pull out the sidelights and put in a double french, glass door. It would completely change the look of the house.
Other ideas: Paint the brick white & the shutters Navy or a light Beige! You could also leave the brick & paint the shutters (black). Update/clean up landscaping & pressure wash porch. Update wall sconces on either side of the door to something larger. They appear to be too small for the overall size of the home and off center.
Hope this info helps & good luck with your project! It's such a great home!

**Q: Black matte countertop options** *(in Kitchens)*

I am looking for black matte countertops for a kitchen renovation, to go with white cabinets, hardwood floors and white subway backsplash. I'm strongly considering leathered absolute black granite. I also picked up a sample of MSI Midnight Majesty quartz in their "concrete" finish. I think I prefer the look of the granite, but wonder if the quartz will be easier to maintain. Appreciate any advice or photos of these products or other ideas. Thanks!

A: I am such a big fan of Quartz! Check out all of the variations of black at Silestone. They also have a great article about Quartz vs. Granite. Here's the link. Quartz vs. Granite (Silestone) Good luck with you project & hope this info is helpful!

**Q: Quartz countertops need to be sealed?** *(in Polls)*

Hi All!
Our manufacturer said our does NOT need to be sealed...however it seems most we know with quartz countertops are sealing them... Is it needed? i'd rather be safe than sorry as our quartz is white...
Thanks!

A: Hi, If you installed Silestone Quartz, here's a link to their Frequently Asked Questions page. Silestone Quartz

**Q: what should I do with trim?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need to either stain or paint my window trim white. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does trim have to be the same in each room?

A: I would suggest painting your window trim white to match baseboards, crown molding & doors. It does not have to be the same in every room. As long as you have a place to end the paint, you are fine to change colors! Good luck with your project!

**Q: Angled Range: Yes or No** *(in Kitchens)*

What are your thoughts on angled range and angled sink? Not sure if I would like this or not. My house plan is drawn with this configuration.

A: No angles! If that is your house plan you posted above, I would suggest removing the wall between the kitchen & the family room. Move the range to the back wall (by the stairs). Add a rectangle island with open space on the living room side & the kitchen sink on the other side of the island. Check my "Projects" for several examples of this open kitchen. It allows for much better flow throughout your space! It's a great plan & good luck with the project!

**Q: Kitchen design/colors...please help!** *(in Remodeling)*

I have a small 10 x 9 kitchen I'm remodeling, the only thing I know for sure:
Bright, white shaker cabinets, stainless appliances, wood floor, peninsula.
There's only one wall that will have backsplash and I can't decide what I want. I'll probably go with calacatta gold quartz, so basically all white so far with exposed brick chimney and wood floors.
Any suggestions?

A: Calacatta gold quartz is my favorite! You could do a simple white subway tile with dark gray grout for a back splash. You could also do a thin brick back splash with a white wash. Hope this info helps & good luck with your project!
