## Community Q&A

**Q: Issues with glass mosaic tile installation** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi, I'm having issues with my backsplash tile installation. It's kind of hard to capture it in the photos, but it's quite noticeable to me. The installer claims the wave like crooked tiles is not due to sagging. I was told that this is what is industry standard for this type of material. I've seen photos online of other similar backsplashes and I didn't notice this wave like pattern. My questions are 1) can this be fixed without tearing everything out 2) is this really industry standard 3) is the wave like crooked mosaic tiles install error or material issues. Note, the mosaics were not cheap or poorly made. The installer claims that these types of tiles are sometimes not laid straight on the backing. The sheets of tile looked fine to me.
During the install they didn't use shims or spacers. I was told that they can't cut out individual tiles to straighten them out if they are crooked, because they would then have to adjust all of them. I also noticed on the glass tiles I loose the corners to the grout. The marble tiles do stick out a bit more than the glass but not by the much. I've never had this type of mosaic glass tiles installed before and I don't know what the proper installation steps are. They basically applied the glass mortar on my walls and installed the tiles (no spacers or shins were used) and then they grouted the next day. Not sure if the results are due to installation time ... took 1 day to install about 50 sqft (1 installer and 1 guy cutting the tiles) and 1 day to grout.

A: Elliot you can fix this! It's not too hard. Chisel out the top few pieces only. You might end up
Removing extra than planned, but it happens. 2. Clean off all previous mortar.
3\. Re mortar & add your tile. Use spacers. 4. Get same grout from installer. You CAN do this! You can't leave it...;-)

**Q: Stunning mirror!!!** *(in Photo Questions)*

This mirror is absolutely stunning and is the show stopper in this room! Can you please provide its source?

A: Is it seashells? Probably custom if so. I could make one after ironing out details.

**Q: Recognize this coverlet??** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Trying to find where this divine coverlet is from. Anyone know???

A: Anthropology has had coverlets very similar

**Q: Name that fabric!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Need help identifying this fabric. Anyone recognize it? The drapes are custom made, not from a store. Any help would be so appreciated!!!
Thank you!!

A: Sorry can't help. Do live it though. Can you do a google search with the image?

**Q: What to do with the colour on the door and garage of house** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have a rental property which currently has a neon purple door (I have no idea why on earth someone would do this) in a couple of years I plan to renovate and build a portico and change the door to wood, so I'm just wanting to paint it at the moment , and perhaps the garage door too. Currently the house is a dark blue and has wood coloured window trim ( not wanting to paint trim just yet) I cant for the life of me figure out what to do. Do i just paint the door white or is there another colour i could paint both the garage and the door to unify it a little? thoughts?

A: Always a dilemma. It goes like this. Balance & scale.
Your garage door throws off the balance of the house in white. It appears more prominent.
Your front entry door shouts out in white contrasted against the wood trim colour & house colour.
So to change the balance the trend is to hide or detract from the garage. Even completely matching it with the house now a days.

The front foot looks like it should not be hidden. Like it should shout out a bit & say I'm over here. But I'm not sure white is doing anything for it here. It's not complimenting the wood.
I'm thinking pick a lovely colour for the door. Light or dark & it will work. & colour match the garage door & trim to the house. To Down play it & hide it.

**Q: Which backsplash design looks better** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hey
I chose the exact same baroque tile. But I can't decide how to go about it. Should I pair it with charcoal subway tiles or use the same tile throughout?
Thanks

A: I personally like the small space between kitchen counters & cabinets to not be chopped up. With varying materials.
I'd suggest to consider the balance of the upper & Lower cabinets with one backsplash ie Moroccan tile.
As a mosaic artist too many different pieces create a mess. There's a balance between the size of each solid surface/cabinet doors contrasted with small pieces. As in your backsplash.
I hope this helps!
