Today I noticed cracks forming around the sink. they are along the veining for the most part. One is right in the corner of the sink and there is a pretty large gap there. It does not appear that the sink area was reinforced and after doing a bunch of research, I am pretty sure that it should have been. ChatGpt is adamant that the slab should be replaced but I feel like it tells you what it thinks you want to hear a lot of the time. I am hoping to get some expert opinions. The fabricator is a small operation, the owner is coming to look at it tomorrow and I would like to know what I should be asking for in this situation. No further work beyond the plumbing being hooked up has been done on the kitchen since the stone was installed so nothing happened to the granite. A: I am curious why install before walls are finished but that is something else Oh, I've been there before on an occupied remodel. It's a couple of weeks before a major holiday, and I'm willing to bet that time crunch was a factor. Looks like they cut the drywall for the old tile backsplash. Not a preferred situation, but when it's going to be concealed again with tile anyway, I've patched that drywall space after install has started. **Q: What grout color and vanity color would you recommend?** *(in Design Dilemma)* What color Mapei grout would you recommend for this subway tile? This is a bathroom in a carriage house apartment. I will live there for a few years until I retire and move to back to Atlanta, at which point it will become a vacation rental for a couple retreat in the mountains. I NEED storage in this bathroom. It currently has a 64 inch that I am going to change to 48 inch vanity with a storage tower of some sort. From what I’m gathering the countertop type towers trend is changing? Not really in style anymore? Having said that, I do not want to be a slave to trends and miss out on what I need functionally. So pic 1 is the current space, pics 2 and 3 are the updated layout. Pics 4,5,6 are the different ways to do the storage tower. Shallow tower on top of countertop Deep storage tower made from cabinet materials Some sort of freestanding piece Thank you! A: 1\) I would reverse the setup and place the tall unit on the left, next to the return wall. It will make the space feel larger. 2) a full depth linen cabinet will give you the most storage but I think a tower sitting on the counter looks better. **Q: What size mirror over angled vanity?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Replacing counters, lights, sinks, faucets, mirrors but keeping vanity. The sinks are centered with the cabinet doors below but shouldn’t mirrors be centered on the wall & with the lights? Should I go with wider mirrors but not the huge mirror? A: I assume you are looking at replacing the existing cut mirrors with new, framed mirrors? If so, then I would go with a little wider mirror than what you have taped out (closer to maximizing the available width on each of those walls). That way, the difference in centering will be much less noticeable to your eye. **Q: Our custom range hood insert is too high, help!** *(in Appliances)* Hi! We're looking to replace our Ventahood range hood, as it is decades old and dying in multiple ways. It's an insert within an a custom enclosure, as the attached pictures show. I'm looking for advice on how to best replace it. The obvious thing to do would be to simply replace the hood insert with a similar one, except... it's too high. It sits at about 32" over the cooktop, which is higher than recommended. It doesn't do a great job at capturing exhaust, especially from the front burners. The next obvious thing to do would be to start over completely from scratch and remodel the entire framed construction above it so that it sits lower. That's a lovely idea, but would be pricey, and gets complex integrating with the rest of the kitchen. Do people have recommendations as to how to best replace this thing? I can also share some ideas I've had for which I'd love feedback, but if you have a better idea than one of mine, I'd love to hear it. Idea 1: Get a hood insert similar to the one we have, and install it a few inches lower. We'd have to add some custom framing extending the current construction downward to enclose it. We would go just wide enough to cover the insert, so presumably we would end up with some wood trim around it but smaller than the current perimeter. This would work, but might look weird. Idea 2: Get an under-cabinet hood. We would just push the under-cabinet hood partway into the opening vacated by the current insert. We'd build some minimal additional support up inside that opening to attach the top of the hood to. This is much simpler and cheaper than Idea 1. We'd mount it at a height so it protrudes below the construction to get the height we want above the cooktop. It's an under-cabinet hood, so its front and sides are designed to be exposed. Downsides are that we might have to cover the back of it; I'm not sure? Might look weird in a different way than Idea 1? Idea 3: Get an island-style hood. The idea would be to take an island-style hood, and just shove the vertical support structure straight into that opening, and mount it somewhere high up in there so that the bottom of the hood protrudes 5 inches or so below the bottom of the current construction. We'd undoubtedly have to do again do some custom work inside to hold it, but it might look more natural than an under-cabinet hood would, especially in the back. Island hoods seem to be expensive, so maybe this wouldn't pay, and might be too big and prominent for that spot. I'm also not sure if this kind of installation could be done. But it might look better than the other options if the hood magically appeared there. Idea 4: Just replace the insert as is. Live with the fact that it's too high and doesn't exhaust well. Open a window. Easiest and cheapest. Thoughts? Thanks! A: I know this is not helpful but from a design standpoint, that whole setup just makes my eye twitch. I vote for either a full-scale redesign of the whole cooking set up or go with the simplest solution of replacing like with like for the hood. **Q: question about matte wall tile for northern exposure bathroom** *(in Design Dilemma)* I have an 8'5" square bathroom that gets northern exposure, so a lot of warm colors go cooler. I want a very California Casual/Modern Organic look, and our house is California Casual. We are doing taj mahal quartzite on the vanity counter, phoenix sand porcelain tile on the floor (from floor and decor) and Taj mahal on the curb. There is a fairly decent size window in the room, but the shower area will remain more shadowed because the shorter end of it is on the same wall as the window. We will have a 40" x 30" mirrored medicine cabinet above the vanity flanked by frosted glass pillar sconces on the opposite wall from the shower. I am considering using Makato Shoji White matte tiles 2" x 8" in the shower and on the separate wall where the tub is (both the shorter shower wall and tub are on the same wall as the window). My only concern is that I don't want the room to look dingy so I'm a tiny bit worried about using matte tiles but there will also be a lot of shiny surfaces already (brushed brass fixtures, mirror, polished quartzite, tub, toilet and shower glass) Any suggestions? A: I think 12x24 is sufficiently large to accomplish the task, and you can usually find a wide selection in that size. Also, if you think the floor tile is too dark for the walls, you might want to consider taking another look at finish options that would work for both the floor and the walls.
