**Q: Stainless steel kitchen cabinets with laminate doors** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Cost comparison with wood boxes and sources.

A: Stainless steel is expensive of course.  You can use plywood/furniture board boxes with stainless steel doors (full overlay) as an option.  This option would probably be 50 - 100% more expensive than a base grade wood/plywood cabinet.

m designing my new kitchen nd one queation keeps bugging me wether to use the same colour sunmica (medium wood colour) as i have used on the exterior or should i go for white/cream....

A: Don't spend the money to match the exterior finish of the cabinetry on the cabinet interiors, you want the interiors to be easy to clean and a light material so you can see what is inside them.  No one will notice or care if the interiors match the exterior (these days it is pretty much industry standard that they do not match) If the cabinet doors have glass fronts then definitely match the exterior or use a pop of paint color on the cabinet backs.

**Q: New Construction - Number of Bathrooms?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Background:
My wife and I are going through the new construction process. The community is a higher-end luxury community. We have two children and my mother-in-law plans on living with us for at least three years to help out with the kids before they start school, but realistically, she may end up with us permanently. Our plan is stay in this house for the long haul (20-30 years). 

Main-Level:
We both agree on the option of adding full bathroom (shower) on the main-level. The room will server primarily as an office/study for now, but can double as guest-room, or maybe an in-law suite or bedroom for ourselves in the future. There's also a powder room.

Basement:
The finished basement has a den (which I'm also counting as a guest bedroom) with a full bathroom. This will primarily be used solely as a guest-room.

Second-Floor:
On the second floor, there are four bedrooms and three full bathrooms standard - the Master Bathroom en-suite, an en-suite in Bedroom \#2, and a full-bath in the hallway adjacent to Bathroom \#3. In Bedroom \#4 there is an option to add a full-bath.

The Dilemma:
The cost to add the full bath is a only a small factor, we can afford to have it done. My opinion is to go ahead and add the full bath so that every bedroom on the Second-Floor can have its own private bathroom. I believe this would be a selling-point when the time does come to sell, especially being in a community where it's common for the other houses to be in the 5.5-6.5 bathroom range. Also, if my mother-in-law ends up living with us permanently, she would most likely be staying on the second-floor (while she's physically able to), not the main-level. This means she would either be taking the standard en-suite room, or have to share the hallway bathroom with one of our children. The full-bath option only takes up some empty space (where maybe a desk or toy box would go) as it would be adjacent to a walk-in closet. Also, it would guarantee that our two kids would have their own bathrooms growing up. My wife is of the opinion that it's too much bathroom, we can spend the option money elsewhere, and that the kids can share a bathroom if necessary. 

Thoughts? is 6.5 bathrooms too much for a 6 bedroom new-construction house?

A: I think that your primary concern should be to give your Mother-in-law her own space, more than just a bed and bath on the second floor,  You and your wife will want some separation and she will need a break from the kid energy.  I would create a suite for her on the basement level with her own private entrance, add in a small kitchen (sink, mini fridge and microwave/small oven).  This will give her a feeling of privacy and separation while still being able to help you out.  Have a conversation with your mother-in-law about what she would prefer - other than that, its great to have a bathroom for every bedroom (for us spoiled Americans).

**Q: In need of a new front door** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Currently door is painted and chipping. I would love a new door and new look. All ideas welcomed.

A: It appears from your photos that the fascia trim is painted a deep plum color, this would be a great color for the doors.  I definitely prefer the door and trim color to match (vs the white contrast that is existing).  I also like the look of glass insert doors over the solid wood doors you have now - the glass doors are more inviting.

**Q: Which kitchen layout is better?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are now renovating our house and we can't decide which kitchen layout would be best. The entrance to our house is at lower level, then when you walk up the steps and the first thing you see is our kitchen (if it were possible, we would obviously change that, but it's not possible..). The first option is to have an island in the center of the kitchen, giving some kind of separation to the work area of the kitchen, which is behind the island, to the stairs. The second option is just having a large U shape kitchen with either a round or rectangular kitchen table in the center. The downside of the latter, is that anyone who comes into our home will right away see the mess of our kitchen work space. Though I'm not sure if we put an island in the center if that would solve our problem. And if it won't solve that problem, then having the U shaped kitchen would be slightly more functional since you would have more space without anything in your way, and also would have more useful counter space. What do you think? I'm adding the two plans to this post

A: Like this layout with the island but definitely put the seating on the outside of the island (living room side) not in the middle of the kitchen - those guests will just be in your way.

**Q: Need help with my kitchen** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I recently refinished my cabinets in my kitchen from white to gray.   I couldn't afford new countertops so I worked with what I had.  Can anyone add any help with maybe what I could do to add to the kitchen or change?  Something seems to be missing.  My butcher block top is on order for my island.

A: I would not recommend painting the laminate counter tops, its just not worth the time and expense, save your money for new counter tops (there are some great new laminates available that would liven up the look or save your money and go granite in the future).  Spend your money on some nice decorative hardware for the doors and drawers fronts.  Do not add a window treatment over the sink, it will just get dirty and you don't need it.  You can put decorative accents on top of the cabinets, graphic items like sign letters work well, or if you collect something.  Make sure they mean something to you and don't clutter it with small items - NEVER use fake plants or anything that will become a dust collector over time.
