**★★★★★ — Clifford Grant, May 2015**

> 2015 is the second year The Cultivated Gardeners have been doing our gardens. In that space of time we have extremely lush gardens in the most natural state. The Four Seasons results exceed our extreme expectations - and provide great pleasure. They do not use chemicals but the natural approach based on their knowledge and skills. For example, after the blooms had all but disappeared in December, we have constantly had new blooms and green growth since the first week of December, 2014. There is alway something new and the colours of the blooms and the various shades of green have provided consistent pleasure to us - almost unbelievable. Sea soil seems to be one of the truisms - and we make sure there is always 10 bags or so available in both the early spring and mid-fall. Some of our pots are on a drip system - designed and installed by the gardeners. The word friends use is oasis - and we agree. Now that summer plants are coming to the fore, we know we have more months of seeing our garden doing what we hoped for, but never realized it would be so quickly done. This perennial garden is full of surprises. The staff of The Cultivated Gardeners have become like family - even sharing root beer floats on the hot days. Water features have been installed to compliment the plants, in the sense of gestalt.

## Selected projects

- [Enhancing the Front Entrance](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/enhancing-the-front-entrance-pj-vj~552757)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 12
  - Description: The homeowners wanted less maintenance, less bog, and more colour. They also wanted to provide guests with an alternative to accessing the front door via the driveway.
- [Plaza entry](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/plaza-entry-pj-vj~167359)
  - Location: Vancouver, BC
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: Another victim of the Chaefer beetle and its hunters, the destroyed lawn is a good excuse to renovate this garden. Our requirements: no lawn, staggered front entrance and minimal colour palette. The Ginkgo and the Hydrangea paniculata were to be retained. We used a mix of natural stone and concrete pavers for the look. The plaza is edged with a variety of evergreen shrubs giving colour and fragrance throughout the seasons. The new retaining wall provides a focal point and it embraces the plaza,…
- [Food Garden](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/food-garden-pj-vj~167282)
  - Location: Vancouver, BC
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: The lawn in this back garden was underused and never very healthy. The lawn was requiring a lot of inputs, and not really giving anything back. The chef owner thought the space better served with food, so out came the lawn. The beds of organic vegetable mix are raised slightly to allow more soil. Our goal was to include enough evergreen material and structural plants to ensure this garden looked good in every season. To please the other owner, we also included cut flowers.
- [Polka dots](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/polka-dots-pj-vj~167141)
  - Location: Vancouver, BC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Racoons and crows gobbled up this lawn, leaving a mess. The owner asked for a low maintenance replacement, assuming this meant a renovated lawn. We suggested turning the lawn into a low maintenance garden would truly be less maintenance. The owner agreed, and left us to design with one stipulation: the garden could not look like a typical garden. So what do you do with a garden surrounding a house painted with red polka dots? Play on the circle theme, of course. And avoid pinks. The grasses swir…
- [Bog Garden](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/bog-garden-pj-vj~264624)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 9
- [Oval patio](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/oval-patio-pj-vj~167080)
  - Location: Vancouver, BC
  - Photos: 7
  - Description: This heritage house deserved a garden as beautifully renovated as the home. The owner wanted an oval patio to seat up to six friends for dinner. Making an oval work became our biggest challenge. We realized repositioning the stairs off the back porch would allow our design to flow. This also allowed better access to the basement for our 6'+ client. A custom fence was designed for privacy, but to still allow in some natural light. Hardscape transitions were enhanced with basalt and river rock. A…
- [Private Patio](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/private-patio-pj-vj~167240)
  - Location: Vancouver, BC
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: This back garden was tired and needed a face lift. The owners also wanted a patio large enough to entertain six people, and no more lawn. Our challenge was working the narrow lot to accommodate the right proportioned patio and the existing shade giving cherry tree; providing privacy from the gigantic house and laneway house built next door; and to ensure a pleasant flow from the back deck onto the new patio.
- [Townhouse](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/townhouse-pj-vj~167316)
  - Location: Vancouver, BC
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: A flood in the back yard motivated this family to renovate. The drainage contractors decided the answer to repairing the damage was to dump about 17 yards of sand in the back yard. At some points, the sand was 18" deep. Our biggest ecological challenge was to make the soil viable without loading all the sand into trucks and transporting it once more. With a lot of back aching manual labour, we dispersed the sand throughout the garden, traded it for the heavy clay in the side garden, and added se…
- [Ioco Lawn Alternative](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/ioco-lawn-alternative-pj-vj~2224820)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 14
  - Description: We were brought in to enhance this front garden. Once again, the motivation for change was damage caused by Chaefer Beetles in the lawn.
- [North Shore Shade Garden](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/north-shore-shade-garden-pj-vj~2225145)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: We were challenged with creating a beautiful garden in time for a wedding shower.
- [Port Moody Steep Slope](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/port-moody-steep-slope-pj-vj~1648999)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 20
  - Description: This front yard needed redesigning to suit the needs of the busy homeowners. They wanted to enjoy their garden, but felt the steeply sloped front lawn was burdensome and not giving anything back to the environment. We were challenged with making the garden more inviting, practical, and ecological.
