> We turned our sunroom into a homework room for our two girls.  This included removing old cabinetry, designing and constructing and installing new cabinetry, and designing and constructing a table, chairs, and storage cabinet.  David Bohnhoff worked closely with my existing interior designer to develop the design for all the new pieces.  They worked well together both sharing ideas openly and also incorporating my feedback.  David also worked well with our AV expert as the existing cabinet housed the AV and sound equipment for the wall hanging tv on the other side of the sunroom wall.  They worked together regarding timing but also design in terms of the fan required and the space requirements for the racks etc.

He communicated effectively with me over email sharing progress reports and photos while the items were under construction in his shop. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Need advice on insulating a 1949 concrete block house.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband and I love our 1949 mid century modern house. It was designed to be part of a small community of modernist houses using inexpensive materials like cement block. We face South and have a wall of large windows to take advantage of passive solar energy. Thankfully, almost all of the windows have been replaced with thermal windows. The issue is that it is a cement block construction with no insulation (that we know of). Inside and out you see painted cement blocks. I think it's single course. Adding furring strips, insulation and Sheetrock would be a huge hassle and expense as we have a newish kitchen we like and don't want to rip out to accomodate thicker walls. I wouldn't mind changing the exterior look of the house. I was thinking of EIFS or dryvit to insulate the outer walls but have read about moisture and insurance issues with those. It seems like EIFS would give us the highest R value for our block walls. Our house is on a slab with radiant floor heat and is fairly comfortable. But, we have high energy bills and I feel like we are just heating the outdoors. I don't think the roof is insulated, either. Should we spend the money there instead of the walls? We could really use some advice about what would be our best option to make the house more energy efficient without breaking the bank. We are in the cold NE.

A: I had a block house with a flat roof on the N.C Outer Banks built in 1960. Insulating the ceiling helped keep the solar gain in the house longer.  The block was stucco finished on the exterior no R value. I wish it had radiant floor heat what a nice feature when it's cold.

**Q: Design help** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Would like to upload photo of living room wall. I have a mantel with fireplace and flat screen mounted above it. Then to the right there is a small window. What can I put on the left? Today we will put up our Christmas tree in that space but that's only temporary. Please give me some ideas. Thanks, Mags

A: A stained glass piece would look nice there. Try to find a piece about the same size as the window.

**Q: Tall deck needs skirting/design ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I recently purchased a home with a nice deck. However, it is very high off of the ground and from the backyard looks goofy and downright ugly.  Any ideas for deck skirting, landscaping...

A: This is a common issue in beach environments checkout what people do along the coast you might gain some nice outdoor storage and add a decorative element to your backyard.  Look to beach rentals or beach vacation for inspiration. This should be a fairly easy fix if you are some what handy and have some basic tools.

**Q: Kitchen Floor?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am wanting to put wood in the whole house.  I like the look of one flooring throughout the whole house. The kitchen has maple wormy wood cabinets.  The floors I am seeing have either too much red or too much brown. Nothing much seems to go with these cabinets. Any suggestions as to type of wood or color?

**Q: Cottage renovation opinions needed!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We just spent our first week in our new to us 1960s beach house.  The place has character, just not our character as of yet. :)  The main floor is open concept with cathedral ceilings and a massive fireplace in the middle. We met with a few contractors to begin getting estimates on some structural fixes needed as well as bids to remove the paneling from all the walls on the main floor.  We will upgrade the electric and insulate as well.  The post & beams on the ceiling and beach wall will remain.  I'm stuck on a couple areas and would love to get Houzzers thoughts.

1\. What can be done for the "bedroom" on the main floor. It currently has panel walls and no ceiling. Any thoughts on how it would look with a ceiling? Could the walls go up to the top of the cathedral ceiling or would everything become unbalanced? After spending the week in the dampish lower level bedrooms, I would love to have the master bedroom on the main floor but need privacy to do that. 
2\. The paneled closet shown in the pictures will be re-built with walls and placed in the corner, eliminating the 9 inch gap. Is there anything I should think about when building a closet? Standard sizes? We plan to store vacuum, beach towels, outside cushions, etc in this closet
3\. The horizontal black beam at the top of the walls is not really a beam.  It is a painted black thin wood.  The contractors said it would be difficult to have drywall go up over this and around the beams. Thoughts?

I've always lived in standard subdivision homes.  I love having this more unique home, but I have to admit it is challenging! Thank you for your thoughts!

A: I would not hesitate to take the walls to the ceiling.  You might want to consider removing some of the paneling add drywall and color to brighten the space. Closets need to be at least 24" deep inside to be effective. I would not dry wall over those beams the ceiling has great character.  Have fun with this project!  I would be happy to offer suggestion if you would like along the way. I remodeled a 1960 flat top fishing cottage on the Outer Banks N.C. a few years ago. I would be happy to share some photos with you.

**Q: Floating shelves** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would like to make floating shelves with steel brackets that can support the weight of a small microwave.  Any suggestions for this DIY projects is greatly appreciated. I've attached a photo from Houzz of exactly I'd like to achieve.
