## Community Q&A

**Q: Stapelia turning black?** *(in Cacti & Succulents)*

Just noticed that the main portions of the stem of my Stapelia is turning dark/black. Do you guys think it's rot? This plant was infested with mealybugs and I doused it in alcohol and pyretherins over one week ago.
The portions are still very firm and feel normal (slight indentation is from my fingernail). Anybody experience this before? It was growing some small buds, but I think they are getting dropped.
So far I'm planning to watch carefully and am ready to hack the plant to bits if anything starts to turn mushy. Haven't unpotted to check the roots/lower stem yet but maybe this is a good idea?

A: Right. I do use a large lab style glass dropper for water control. I also collect rain water and use it most the time. Cannot wait to see how my first spring/summer goes for 28 of my 30.

**Q: Best Soil For Huernias/Stapelias....Advice** *(in Cacti & Succulents)*

I am going to TRY and build up my collection again. And I am thinking of buying a custom mix on EBay for cacti/succulents. They make note that they have a lot of pumice for drainage. I know that one of the main problems why nearly all my plants died is that the roots rotted because of all the rain here in Fla! The roots could never dry out or get air. So, is a pumice heavy soil a good thing to have for these plants? Is this the 'magic medium' I have been missing from the 'Miracle Gro' cactus soil I use have been using, then added tons of perlite to it for drainage...it didnt work for 90% of the plants.OR would buying a big box of JUST pumice and adding it to my bags of Miracle Gro cactus soil be just as good or better? I need advice. I am not going to waste hundreds of dollars this time on the plants and put them in soil that is killing them in the end! So..should I buy a premade mix off of EBay, or a box of pumice and add it to the soil I have been using?

A: Good luck! This spring, I think I will remove all my "top dressing" (small gravels) I think it's been creating humidity during winter, though indoors it's cold. Mine is similar to yours under the surface. Looks like that will breathe.

**Q: Foxglove from seeds--now? Any tips?** *(in Minnesota Gardening)*

I just harvested some foxglove seeds. I wonder if I should sow them now, or should I freeze the seeds for a while (how long?) and sow them? If latter, will there be enough time for them to establish to survive the winter?
I did try winter sow this January, in milk jugs, and was careful to sow them on the surface (for I read the seeds need light to germinate). Sadly, none germinated. The seeds included fresh bought Foxglove Camelot Rose F1 Hybrid (first year flowering type), and the seeds I collected from my plants. What could I have done wrong?
Looking forward to hearing from veterans. There are always so many generous and thoughtful help on this forum. Thanks in advance.

A: I recently bought two, 1000 seed packets on eBay (two different sellers and types of various colors) All I've done was amend around the top 3" of soil with our local soil, cactus succulent mix, chicken manure, and pea gravel. (using what I had...) where I direct sowed the seeds. (sprinkled all seeds on top of the soil then watered after patting gently.) Watered maybe every 3-4 days. I now have 2000 seedlings up about a week now. Once they get bigger I will thin the heard. Fingers crossed. I chose an area that gets good morning sun, then dappled all day... At the base of our 40' maple tree, against a tall fence/wall. We are in TIBURON, CA. Not 100' from the edge of the bay.

**Q: Pride of Madeira--No bloom** *(in California Gardening)*

I planted a Pride of Madeira from a one-gallon pot about 2 and one-half years ago. It's quadrupled in size but has never bloomed. It's in a sunny location in Menlo Park. Clay soil. Never been fertilized. Any suggestions?

A: Our came up in our cactus garden around 2-3 years ago. I’ve constantly pruned and pinched it, creating a tall shrub ( so it fits in a narrow area and doesn’t shade cactus below it ) It has never bloomed. It gets watered only when dried out.
