He worked with us to remove overgrown and unhealthy foundation plantings, crumbling railroad ties and dead grass, designing a spectacularly beautiful front landscape for my home. We hired him to work on our lawn for the end of the season, and when we under-watered and killed two of the new plants he replaced them as part of our service. ## Community Q&A

**Q: Tree Removal?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I recently posted this photo for advice on paint color.  But after looking at it online I think it maybe time to lose the Japanese Maple by the house and the Sesame Street character tree in front of it.  I don't want to kill anything but I think they have just grown too big.  Any other suggestions?

A: Yes, talk to a professional arborist or landscape designer. I agree they are overgrown and it might have been planted a little to close together and to the house. However, you have really beautiful and valuable plant material and it would be a shame to remove them completely. It might require some aggressive maintenance or transplanting.

**Q: House needs some color and life!  Help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need expert advice!  As you can see our house has tan siding with the same color garage doors, and slightly lighter shutters and front door, although the screen door matches the tan siding.  Should we paint all the shutters, the garage doors OR just the front door?  And if we paint just the front door, do we also paint the screen door?  We were thinking either Black or a deep midnight or navy blue, which I am partial to.  Would love any and all advice on how to add color and dimension!  Where to put it and when it's too much!  Thanks.

A: You could also consider adding plants that will contrast, Purple foliage shrubs and trees would compliment it nicely.  For example some shrubs like ninebark, weigela, or PJM Rhododendron and perennials like Heuchera.

**Q: this looks beautiful. What are the 3 trees in the center of the pic?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: The 3 trees in the center of the photo are Japanese cedars or Cryptomeria japonica 'Yoshino'. One of my favorite evergreens.

**Q: My exterior needs a facial** *(in Design Dilemma)*

My husband decided that he would trim the landscaping but, instead he butchered it!!! I'm not concerned about that right now but, figured it's time to paint the exterior garage door as its prob. The cheapest route instead of having the panels replaced. If I have to resort to that I can check prices as I would NOT want my garage door to start peeling.

\- I think this side of the house is too flat: paint the garage door? If so, what color & kind of paint? The walk thru door - I need to change it - considering a stained door w/ glass panes on the top ? And possibly a copper awning above it like the other copper awnings on my house? and should I put shutters on the window by the walk thru door? If so what color? (Dark blue gray? & what kind?) I can't really put shutters on the rest of my house but, possibly on the windows on the back of my house on each end (the 3 Windows framed on each end?) Also, the fake shutter on the front of the house & the other shutter door thing that leads into the garage - they've faded & look rusty orange or something. I would have picked something more like a dark brown - please give me ideas of what color as well.
I'm cannot usually visualize what things would look like so, anyone that can actually show me what it would look like - I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!! I received so much help w/ my interior on my other 2 dilemmas that I'm very thankful. I just need a change from doing the inside & with spring near I figured it's time to do a little updating on the outside. Excuse the mess - he's been pressure washing so, things are scattered! Thank you in advance!

A: In the pictures, I can see that the trees don't have any leaves on them.  Also, you mentioned power washing and it looks like shrubs were cut back. So the house might look different during the the growing season. With that said, I would recommend adding plants to soften the exterior and create curb appeal. Consider some evergreen shrubbery. And your pool patio would look awesome with container flower planters!
