There is pretty much no character and I would love to do something to make it less plain. Hey all,

I want to start using some canna bulbs in our front yard landscaping.  My parents have raised cannas for years and they are always fantastic.  We live in zone 6b, and the winters here are too cold for the bulbs to survive, so they must be dug each fall.  This means that there will be bare spots in the flower beds during the winter time.  My wife has resisted having cannas because of this.  Are there any cheap, temporary winter landscaping ideas I can implement during the winter to fill those gaps?

A: You can raise some winter bloomers like cyclamen, crocus and dwarf iris that flourish in the cold.

**Q: Possible to prep and care for a lawn without using chemicals?** *(in Landscape Design)*

My basic question is if it is at all possible to prep for and maintain a lawn without using chemicals? If you've seen my recent post, I'm back-pedaling a bit... As I've been trying to find a good type of lawn or lawn substitute for the approximately 800 sq ft, full sun area in zone 9 of bay area, CA, I realized I should first be seriously thinking of how to prep the area for it. 
Up until November, the area had been riddled with patchy, broken up concrete and tall, dense weeds. We got the area cleared last fall, but with the wet season we've had in the past months, it had started to green up with weeds again. Oxalis was one of the predominant weeds, but there were many, many more. Just in the past week, they have been cleared up again (mostly superficially), in preparation for gardening beds and a patio at the periphery of this area. I've been laying cardboard down on the gardening beds (which was suggested to me as a better option that weed-cloth), and am now wondering if I should also be covering up the to-be lawn area so the weeds don't take over again, while we wait to decide what we want there. Of course, this covering would be temporary and would need to be lifted up when we put down plugs or sod. I don't know if this is a useful approach though.
What would be the best way to keep this area clear before and while putting in the lawn, if I really wanted to avoid things like Round-up and other chemicals? Or is that a laughable naiveté of a not-yet-lawn-owner?

And for your Oxalis problem, this is what you can do to get rid of it without using chemical:

Spray the oxalis with a homemade non-toxic weed killer. Fill a small spray bottle with white vinegar and add one or two squirts of dish soap. Gently shake, then spray the mixture directly on the base of the oxalis clusters. This works even better on a hot day. The foliage should be dead within 24 hours.

Things You Will Need
Hoe or spade
Scissors or garden shears
Plastic bag
Spray bottle
White vinegar
Dish soap

Tip
Oxalis flowers, seed pods, leaves and stems are edible in moderation. Those with kidney stones or gout should avoid it, as they do any food (such as tomatoes or spinach) with oxalic acid.

Warning
Do not spray homemade weed killer on any plant you wish to keep; vinegar kills any plant it touches.
