And from pricing estimates it seems rebuilding cabinets isn't that much more than painting / refinishing our existing 80's era cabinetry. We'd like to take the opportunity to improve upon the existing layout as well. The kitchen is just shy of 12' deep, and it has circulation access from 2 sides. The existing layout has cabinetry against the plan south wall that oddly cuts into the walking path of the space, however you get used to it. It does get congested around the sink, cooktop, and the refrigerator / pantry areas when more than one person is using the space. The cooktop is electric in the island with a downdraft currently, and we will be replacing it with an induction integrated downdraft, we've got no issues keeping it located in the island. We're considering swapping the refrigerator and the wall oven / microwave combo locations. And perhaps taking the allocated square footage of the plan south wall lower cabinetry and moving that to the island. Also debating putting some stool seating with a flip or pull out counter on the plan west end. We've been working with a contractor but think we'd also appreciate any input on the general layout. Thanks in advance! A: Since the room is only 12 feet deep, I wouldn’t move the south-wall cabinet storage into the island if that makes the island wider. That will make your 33-inch aisles even tighter. I’d consider shallow pantry cabinets on the south wall instead of standard 24-inch-deep lower cabinets. You could gain storage without projecting as far into the walking path. I would also use light wood or a light paint color for the cabinets to make the kitchen feel more spacious and open. If the cooktop stays in the island, move it enough so the person cooking isn’t directly back-to-back with the person at the sink. Also confirm the new downdraft duct route before finalizing that location. We used a 3D plan to coordinate the island proportions, cabinetry, appliances and circulation in this Mar Vista kitchen: https://overlandremodeling.com/interior-design-gallery/mar-vista-kitchen-design **Q: bathroom tile dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)* I’m using an interior designer and we all agree the entire shower up to the ceiling should be tiled. She says to extend out from shower along window wall, so you see it when you walk into the bathroom. I don’t think it should be a focal wall. If anything, I think the vanity/toilet wall should be tiled which is parallel to the shower. She doesnt disagree with that, but then she said the whole bathroom shoule be tiled. We are trying not to tile the whole bathroom. The tub is becoming a walk in shower. See photos A: I’d tile the shower to the ceiling and stop it at a clean construction line—the outside edge of the curb/glass or a full-height jamb. Extending tile partway onto the window wall without a natural stopping point can look like the shower tile simply overshot its boundary. I also wouldn’t tile the whole vanity/toilet wall just to balance it. Use a backsplash there only if it serves a purpose. Before ordering, have the designer draw the exact tile termination, trim profile and window return on an elevation.
