The installers are coming in three days! Design is not my forte, but my husband and I are frugal and doing as much of the work as possible. This is a small hall bath, roughly 8' x 5.5' including the area where the tub goes. I am using a 4" x 12" white subway tile from the top of the tub to the ceiling. On the floor I am using a beige 12" x 12" tile. The vanity is white and all metal accents, faucets etc, are polished chrome. I think my preference is for staggered tiles on the wall, but can be convinced to go stacked. The floor is the real issue - straight, staggered or diagonal? I know aesthetics is a personal choice, but what layout will make the room seem bigger? The grout is a close match to the color of the tile. Help, please! Sorry I don't have any pictures, but at this point it is just a gutted room. A: staggered on the wall and diagonal on the floor, but like you said, personal preference **Q: powder room cosmetic re-model** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are doing a quick and cheap remodel of our powder room. We already have most the wall paper down and I have a new mirror selected. Beyond that, I'm not sure. The toilet, sink, and floor must stay at this point. We may redo them later but don't have the time or money at this point. I will get a faucet to match the finish on the mirror and paint or replace the light fixture. The issue we have had in the past is water spraying the wall behind the sink. Any suggestions on what we can do to keep from damaging the wall in this location? When the wall paper was there, it was yellowed from always getting wet. The room is very small (4'-7" x 5'4"). Any suggestions for for a water guard and/or design would be more than appreciated! Sorry for the bad pictures...it's really hard to take pictures of such a small space A: You have some nice photos in your bath idea book. Pick the look you like and go for it. You can retint the grout in your floor tile if the dark grout is killing your look. **Q: Need to decide tonight! Question about oil rubbed bronze doorknobs** *(in Design Dilemma)* There is a sale that ends tonight....I am curious about the durability of oil rubbed bronze for doorknobs. Is this finish durable, or will I be replacing these sooner than other finishes? Thanks! A: Oil rubbed bronze comes in a living finish which will polish to a shinier, brighter finish where it is touched daily and is the finish I personally prefer. It also comes in a clear coated finish which should not change at all over time unless the finish goes bad which should be covered in the warranty if you have a good quality, name brand knob. **Q: space between faucet and spray behind kitchen sink** *(in Design Dilemma)* We have the Rohl tuscan brass faucet. There is 9.5 in. between the far right knob and the end of the farmhouse sink. The two knobs and center of the faucet are 4 inches apart. Should the spray be installed 4 inches from the far right knob for symmetry or should the spray be in the middle of the empty space between the far right knob and the right edge of the sink, which would be 4.75 away from far right knob? Its calcutta gold marble that we are cutting and I really want to get it right! I know there is no right answer, but what do the designers think? A: I agree with the 6" spacing. It does not need to be symmetrical since it's not matching anything on the other side. A 4" spacing would make it look like the whole faucet was off center. **Q: Need help** *(in Design Dilemma)* What do I need to do to complete this room? Unfortunately , I can't get rid of the maroon carpeting. A: agreed with abbyjean's suggestion of maroon and gray pillows! **Q: Hi everybody need Help from pros** *(in Design Dilemma)* we install travertine tile DIY but we need some suggestion for a new backsplash please o any better idea A: Try a drystacked slate for good contrast to both floors and surround.
