## Community Q&A

**Q: color disaster in my small room** *(in Paint)*

I have just moved into a rent house, and the room is very small and the color is awful. I'm horrible with colors and on a tight budget. Ideas for a color scheme for room!!

A: What colors do you like to wear? Is there a painting or similar artwork you love? Either can be a starting point. For illustrations and more easy DIY tips on choosing color, this guide about how to choose and use color should help.

**Q: should I use this rug?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Should I use this rug?

A: I think you can do a lot better with your rug choice -- and it is too small. With the pattern on the chair, I'd keep it t a solid with texture or a simple geometric pattern like a diamonds/trellis design. To determine proper rug size, see the flying carpets section in Top 10 Decorating Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

**Q: Still stuck ..Dk Blue or off white upper wall for dining room** *(in Home Decorating)*

I had posted before and I have gotten this far. Today I am ready to go buy paint samples for the top part of the wall. I have painted the bottom, changed the room around and ordered the candy ( Coming today :) ) I cant decide if I want dk blue upper wall or just paint it off white upper part .. That way I can easily change out art work, curtains, accents colors ,when I want a change. Here are the pics so far .
Paint and a new rug, and decluttered .

Chandy ordered :

Art work I am thinking
I will recover the seats of chairs also .

Thank you for your help!

A: I would go with one of the mid-tone blues in your chair fabric. And please lower the chandelier. (See \#7 on Top 10 Decorating Mistakes and how to avoid them)

**Q: Dining Room Chandelier** *(in Polls)*

I have purchased the chandelier below for my formal dining area (see picture). The room is 11”x10” and the chandelier is 30” wide. Is it going to be too big for the room?

A: Not too big at all - just don't hang it too high, which is the most common mistake people make with dining room chandeliers. See \#7 on Top 10 Decorating Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.

**Q: exterior colors of house** *(in Home Decorating)*

my husband and I are building a house and we cannot agree on exterior colors. I really want black/charcoal color shingles but my husband hates white fascia/trim (He hates anything white). So I don't know what color of fascia to use.
We have decided not to add trim around windows.
We want to add ledgestone around the bottom of the house and the bottom of all four pillars.
It will have stucco siding. We do not know what color yet.
we already have all four wooden pillars. We also want a wooden entry door and "wooden" garage doors.
Side note: we live in the desert. My husband does not want our house to stand out next to all the other tan and brown houses (I HATE tan and brown)
Any input is greatly appreciated at this point Haha

A: What if you went with a grayed taupe like Benjamin Moore's Sparrow with cream or Nordic Gray with Vanilla? Seems like a good compromise if you can't convince hubby to go with a darker gray.

**Q: Chantilly Lace or Decorators White?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Please help. I am trying to decide on a paint color. I am planning to paint my entire home white. I would like for it to be museum white. Going for a Scandinavian aesthetic. I'm trying to decide between Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and Decorators White. Entire home including trim and molding would be this color. Behr's Bakery Box is also in the running. Please advise. Thanks.

A: Colors look different in different lighting and rooms. The best thing to do would be to purchase a sample size of each color and paint a large posterboard (or better yet, foam core board) with each color. That way you will have a large area of color and you can move it from room to room and look at it during different times of day/lighting conditions. Our perceptions of colors also change depending on what color(s) it is next to, so the tone of your furniture, view from the windows (a verdant park vs a brick high rise, for example), etc. For more hints, see How to choose and use color in your home.
