Do you see tiny houses and long to pitch your belongings and live a simpler, smaller life, or does the idea of extreme downsizing put you in a cold sweat?

**Q: Replace bay window and make exterior more of our house more modern.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We have changed out all our windows on our 30 year old house to vinyl slider windows. Except for the bay window on the front of the house. We can't decide what to do with it. The inside has been renovated to a very modern style and we want the exterior to look more modern as well. 

We are not sure if we should remove the bay section and make that area flat and put in a large rectangle window with some sections that open. Or if we should just replace the bay window but perhaps make the height taller so that the bottom will come further down into the large space of siding that sits below it. 

Either way we want to get rid of the white bars and the new window must open in some way. 

I've attached some older and newer photos of the house because some allow better views than others. The colours are now several tones of grey and the front door has been replaced with a stained fir door with obscured glass. We would love other suggestions of how to make the exterior more modern.

**Q: Replacement windows vs.  full tear outs** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are in the process of putting an addition on our house. We keep going back and forth between the existing windows.  Should we do replacement windows or do full tear outs.  As a side note we are residing the whole house.   Is it worth the extra money for the tear outs?

A: Are the existing window frames in good shape? Tear out involves new inside/outside trim etc why do that if your windows are basically sound.

**Q: Passive solar heating and window glazing** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi

We are in the process of designing an upstairs extension for our home in Australia.  Our current windows which face North (the sunny side in Australia) are shaded in summer but let the beautiful warming sun in in winter.  The glass in the old section of our house is regular clear glass. Our regulations (BASIX) are stipulating that we need single toned or low e glass in the new extension on both north and south facing windows.  Obviously, in summer, the heat that comes from the sun is a problem but as we have no other forms of heating (we live in a temperate coastal location) we rely on the sun in winter.  My question is does low e glass mean that the warming sun in winter is blocked out? I look forward to an answer.

A: It is true low-e glass will prevent you from getting some of the passive solar heat in winter, but will block that same unwanted heat in the summer

**Q: Sliders vs. swing(french) doors to a deck? Asthetics, functionality?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

There is a view involved. Concerns about space lost with swing doors. And heat loss. But are they more valuable upon resale?

A: French doors very energy consuming and the screen system is never right

**Q: need help with noisy road** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We live in a wooded area in Colorado and our backyard backs up to a noisy road.  We can see and hear the cars.  We are at 7300 ft and it is hard to plant enough trees that will grow or grow fast enough to make a difference. We are also under a covenant and are not allowed to build a wall.  Any suggestions?  (you can see the blue car in the picture)

A: Put triple pane windows in breaks the sound wave up also very energy efficient
