He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brown University as an undergraduate, received an MFA in color theory at the University of Wisconsin, and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985. A Dales Traveling Scholarship in 1984 was awarded to study traditional and modern housing in India and Nepal. His vision, sense of balance, artful use of materials coupled with precise execution created an award-winning masterpiece. Even though there were several previous renovations, only Willis had the vision to add skylights, relocate the master bedroom facing the noisy parking lot to the quite exposure, replace windows with sliding doors, expand the useful space with interior sliding partitions, craft a dynamic ceiling and unify the floor material. On the mechanical front, his design added central HVAC coupled with radiant heat replacing the baseboards.
