**Q: Painters used eggshell finish instead of satin finish on our walls** *(in Paint)*

So we are building a house and our purchase contract specs have Satin finish for our wall paint...we made sure of this during negotiations with our contractor and paid more in our purchase price for satin finish rather than standard eggshell finish. They painted the whole interior of the house last week and we just noticed that they used eggshell finish. My husband is especially upset because eggshell finish is extremely hard to remove stains from & keep clean. It wears faster than satin ... We have had eggshell finish  before in our old house & ended up painting everything satin ....we have 3 toddlers and their hands are messy at times, plus 3 dogs.  Should we make them paint it all over again at no expense to us? Our contractor has been great & I don't want to make this difficult on him since he s a small business doing a few custom homes a year...but at the same time they painted our whole house in a finish that we didn't request. What should we do?

A: The cost of paint is determined on the brand and grade of paint, not by the amount of sheen. So you should not of been charged extra. Eggshell is the typical finish found on interior walls, whereas satin and/ or semi- gloss is typically used for trim work and cabinetry. 
It is true that the higher the sheen, the more durable the paint will be, however eggshell is what we always recommend for typical living spaces with some exceptions for kitchens and bathrooms where a little extra durability may be required; in which case we recommend using a satin / pearl finish. 
That being said, if you specified you wanted a satin finish over eggshell, they should be responsible for providing the appropriate product to you because of their mistake.   
I would also talk to your contractor about the extra charges in regards to the difference in sheen. 

Different brands and even grades of paint can all vary significantly in quality and durability, and depending on what was used in your previous home may be part of the issue. A good paint in an eggshell finish should be durable enough to withstand the little fingers and furry family members, but keep in mind that even the best of the best products out there do require touch ups every so often ( anywhere between 5-10 years).
