## Community Q&A

**Q: do light fixtures need to match in open floor plan?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello again- I was wondering if anyone could advise on light fixtures. We are renovating our kitchen- the plan is white cabinets, Taj Mahal countertops and polished nickel pulls/knobs. The kitchen connects into our family room which has a gold chandelier. Would it be ok to use these pendants (over the counter) and chandelier (over our large kitchen table) in a polished nickel finish? I know mixing metals is ok- I just feel like I’d prefer them to match in the kitchen. I just want to make sure it won’t look silly with the gold fixture within view. A: Hi Dena, as a designer, I can tell it won't look silly. 

You have the chandelier and the wall sconces in brass. 

It looks silly when we mix metals and one of them is "alone", without any link to other pieces. If you had only brushed nickel all over the place and then a chandelier in brass, that wouldn't be balanced. I don't suggest mixing more then 2 metal finishes either... I hope this helps!
