**Q: Need help with living room interior design** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi.

Our House is 1920's Colonial Revival.
I am trying to find the best use of space (small) using existing or new furniture to accomplish.
I am open to all ideas.  Please ignore mess, house is getting put back together after Kitchen reno and floor refinishing.  ...And window unit is no longer, temporary.  Plan is at 30 scale.   Thanks!  Enjoy the Wknd

A: Like your plan with sectional tucked in corner. I usually float sofas, but because of projection of stair landing, I think your idea is best here.  Maybe on rug, a nice long ottoman facing the stair? Or, put 2 small but comfy chairs on rug, then place 2 chairs (do you have a match to cane back chair by fireplace now?) with more exposed wood on each side of rad - then pull them up to seating area if more adult company is around.  Have to keep area in front of rad open, as that is your main traffic route.  Usually not a fan of painted stone as much as painted brick, but that grout is too bright, so try to find a way to temper it if possible.  Maybe a nice coordinating, softer gray tile in place of dark one on hearth now.  Have fun - your home looks lovely!  For now, also remember blinds can be tiltied in opposite direction to block sun, and not closed completely.

**Q: I need help decorating my new house, please! I'm stuck!!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We just bought a home for my family and I am having a hard time figuring out how I can decorate the house nicely.  The house has tons of windows, which is wonderful!  It has red oak floors throughout the bottom floor, staircase, and upper landing. The walls are, I guess, champagne color/beige and the trim of the doors and windows are white.  It has tons of oak cabinets in the kitchen and into the family room.  The kitchen counter is grey. As the house cost a lot, in Santa Barbara, we are on a budget. We have 4 kids and a couple quiet dogs.  Our old couches, rugs, and dark furniture will go (a lot of what you see in the photos), so I am looking to figure out colors and designs for the house.  I really would like to get away from dark furniture, greens, yellows, and oranges (my husband filled our old house with those colors).  Any design help would be so appreciated!! We have company coming in Thanksgiving so I need to get started on all of this.  Thank you for any help! (Please forgive the boxes and clutter as we are still moving in and figuring out everything.)

A: I think first, paint the bookcases and brick in the family room. Benjamin Moore Simply white is a nice soft warm white for trim and bookcases, do walls a nice soft color from the Ben Moore historic color collection.  Add a sofa, but flip it to other side of room - less expected - with several nice arm chairs, or 2 loveseats facing each other as long as they are smaller scaled then your current sofa.  Put a sofa table behind the sofa in front of window, with lamps.  I would leave kitchen alone for now, change out knobs to something bright and fun, then add a good sixe indoor/outdoor rug to brighten it up a bit.  Living room looks little used, so how about 4 arm chairs around a central table for a nice, adult conversation area. For colors, blues & greens are always beachy, but for a switch, how about turquoise & teal, or go with blues with pops of red, maybe faded down a little? this gets you away from colors that were more fall-like in previous home. **Q: Entry way/Bedroom help please!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I live in a studio so my bedroom is also my entry way. I want to do something along the wall but nothing too much. any ideas? I have a lot of wood already in the space so i would like to keep it more light but still go with the rest of my decor. Eventually I want to have an all white duvet cover and change up the art on the walls as well. I attached a second photo so you can see the style of the rest of my studio.

A: How about hangind sheers from the ceiling to create separation without bulk?  I would use either thin metal drapery rods or you could use plumbing pipe for a much cheaper alternative.  Get elbows, attach to ceiling & put pipe between - this will drop it enough to be able to move if you need to.  Attach swing arm wall lamps on each side of bed & get floating shelves (very small!) for each side as night tables.  Put the kitty crate under the shelf on the closet side.  You could also use a solid drape to coordinate with your living area (which, BTW, I love!) or one drape panel at wall with sheers the rest of the length to seperate it from the door, but not the living area entirely.  Not sure if platform is the bed, or a solution you came up with, but you may want to go to a bed frame - in your place, those extra few inches will matter!  It could be raised a little higher for storage, or you could get a bed with storage drawers underneath - always a good solution for bulky items that are hard to store (like blankets, comforters, winter sweaters.)

**Q: Buyers Remorse** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Oh Houzz gurus. We bought a house. It was a bidding war. (I hate those). And it needs so much work I woke up in the middle of the night questioning my sanity. Because we paid top dollar for it (gulp...) I would like it to not look like a scary old lady cat house. We may have to replace some big ticket items (septic etc), so my budget is tiny. What would you do to make this place look... I dunno... good? (Thank you so much in advance! I really appreciate it).

A: paint the upper brick a nice taupe, like Ben Moore ashley grey, HC-37, leave stone alone. garage door will be same as house, front door in HC-137, Stratton blue. pull monster shrub our and remove railing by front door. accent front corners of stoop with flower pots. no more cat.lady house, and a great beginning.

**Q: Study Update Suggestions** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi. I am going through my home room by room and updating each one at a time. Below are photos of our Study. Any suggestions to make it look better?

A: Hi Marylise - I would put the desk in front of the window and have the return go ino that corner to plug in all outlets.  Ficus should go in opposite corner on the other side of the window,  The velvet chairswould then look nice on an angle in front of bookcases.  Painting could then go in corner by bookcases & look gret.  Add a rug, but not a geometric - everything is already square - use a an abstrct pattern or floral, preferably with no border.  Then find a wonderful complimentary painting in a landscape size for the wall with the current painting.  Lamps are great, but not too weeny, something substantial since desk is pretty large.  Your accessories in the cabinets would be greeat, just mix it up without being chaotic - stack books flat with smaller ojects on top, larger books standing up.  As you place thing on the shelves, step back to doorway and make sure there is balance between small/large & dark/light, i.e. not all small pieces to one side & large to the other.
