Hopefully, it will be a long term love affair. Here's how it happened.... We have a wonderful local nursery in a mini shopping center near my home. Whenever I stop in the grocery store, I am drawn to walking through the nursery. Luckily (!), I stopped in that day because I spotted the one and only plant of Stipa ichu. Here's a photo: How could I resist a grass that looked this pretty.... When I googled Stipa ichu I discovered it is an adaptable semi-evergreen Mexican/South American grass. It's notable for moving in the slightest breeze. Surprisingly, not so widely available in the US. For example I could find no mail order sources. I was initially worried it might be an invasive seeder like Stipa teniussima, but, good news, it seems not. i wound up ordering four more from my local nurseryman and planted them in some oversized clay pots I had just acquired for free and was wondering what I could possibly plant in them. I went to quite a lot of effort to make a long lasting container mix for them. FWIW, here is the formula I used: Two parts rich compost One part vermiculite One part Coconut Coir A: stipa ichu in the morning, assist from wildfire smoke. **Q: Garrya** *(in Northwestern Gardening)* Anyone growing Garrya here in the Pacific NW? I'm thinking of including a few in my gardens but would like some local input as to which species and/or variety you might recommend. Pluses and minuses? Include photos if you have. A: i have fremontii and wrightii at my home garden. both from cistus. planted out only a year and a half ago, they definitely had a VERY slow first year in ground. fair amount of leaf spot that is mostly gone. seem to be doing better this year. **Q: Suggestions for seed mix for country lawn?** *(in Northwestern Gardening)* Any recommendations for a grass/forb mix for a lawn that is mowed at most once per week? We don't fertilize, water or apply weed killer to our existing (too large) lawn. The new seeding is for the construction site where we recently tore down a decaying barn and a leaning chicken coop, replacing them with a shed. I see that a lot of seed mixtures now contain "MicroClover". Is this something you recommend? A: i don't do no mow with it, and i don't think its especially short. but in general slow growing (which can hurt it when you overseed an existing lawn, gets overwhelmed by fast creeping plants) **Q: 2nd annual 'Shovel Prune' plant swap (Portland area)** *(in Northwestern Gardening)* Just wanted remind people to start thinking about, looking around in their garden, and seeing what they might dig up for the 2nd annual 'Shovel Prune plant swap in the Portland area. Label your plants with botanical and common names, color, height, width, etc. if possible. Pictures are also great. FREE STUFF: The last half hour (11:30-noon) you may be able to pick up some free stuff from gardeners if they are willing to give it away. Many gardeners generously share plants from the abundance of their gardens. This is an excellent way to begin your garden and an excellent way to thin out that giant patch of Shasta Daisies, etc. WHAT IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO TRADE: Cookies and chocolate work like money at the Shovel Prune! Hopefully we will not have less than 25 F in the coming few weeks. So far I have got only two fruits from this tree. Any experience with this variety? A: i saw mason bees and bumblebees out today as well. hopefully everyone will get fruit! **Q: Does soil "wear out"?** *(in Northwestern Gardening)* I have two gardening friends who don't know each other and both of them have decided that their vegetable garden soil is "worn out" and needs replacing. Both of them compost but I'm not sure if they use commercial fertilizers. I know they use lots of shredded leaves and other organic materials. I guess I didn't want to sound stupid by questioning them too extensively, they are both Master Gardeners.
