> We were looking to modernize our kitchen, and Kelly came in and did a phenomenal job. She took into account our lifestyle and our appliance needs, and she was able to add in a new a few unexpectedly awesome design twists of our her own. I would certainly recommend her to anyone looking to redo their kitchen. She came with us to pick our tiles, cabinets, kitchen hardware, and her opinions were very helpful.

> Kelly helped us redesign a very small kitchen in a 100+ year old home. She offered 3 alternatives and found a way to make the space much more usable with lots of additional counter space and storage. Her direction on cabinets, countertops and tiling was also very valuable! We are very happy with our beautiful new kitchen!

> Description Of Work:
>
> Kelly carefully orchestrated the remodeling of our Kitchen and PowderRoom.
>
> Design and collaboration were excellent from the start. We had very specific ideas (probably a designers worst nightmare) which Kelly seamlessly formed into a producible vision.
>
> The transformation of our kitchen from a desperate space into a modern, highly-functional yet beautiful piece of art is testament to Kelly's capacity, imagination and--as was the case with our project--dedication and resilience in the face of unforeseen and un-controllable challenges.
>
> Specify Design is solid & we'll be going back to Ms. Brown for future projects. . . repeatedly.

> I am currently in the process of working with Kelly Brown of Specify Design on a few smaller projects. Her expertise has been invaluable and will save me time & money. I realized, had I done these projects on my own, I would have chosen the wrong materials, mearsurments etc for the project. Not all projects are DIY! And not every employee at a hardware store is an expert, so it pays to hire one! Kelly's design experience is helpful for the small project of redecorating or updating a room to a complex remodel of a kitchen or bath.

**★★★★★ — Erin Hill, Feb. 2013**

> We hired Kelly at Specify Design to help us redesign our entire 2BR condo after a complete fire casualty. She provided us with the highest level of detail and attention that we didn't even know we needed. She had many suggestions along the way on where to save money and spend money in order to create the most value. The result is the perfect level of modern and classic with upgraded functionality in all spaces. Overall her work was A+ quality and we look forward to working with her again on our next project.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Tips for finding a good moving company?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

For those that have moved recently, or even those that have moved EVER, how did you find your moving company? Did you recruit some friends or did you hire a crew? I've heard lots of horror stories about terrible experiences. What's yours?

Share your experience! (Photos encouraged)

A: Sullivan Moving in San Diego is excellent! They are easy to work with and also offer vaults to store things as necessary with many moves.

**Q: How do you treat corners when wallpapering an accent wall?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

How do you treat corners when wallpapering an accent wall?

A: If you start hanging the wallpaper in the corner on the accent wall, take the paper about an inch past the corner so you can trim it. Once it's hung, trimming right into the corners will create a nice crisp line so your accent wall is perfect.

**Q: Looking for advice on how to change the fireplace wall. Planning a remodel of living room, with new furniture and flooring. Dislike the wooden panelling, but don't want to invest a lot of money, as we will likely have to move** *(in Design Dilemma)*

A: I love the scale and detail of the paneling that's currently in place. As others have said, I would suggest painting it white or the color of your walls. If you stain it darker, it will make that wall look like a dark tunnel against your lighter walls. Plus, given the wood piece of furniture already there, a dark stain won't contrast well. You could paint the mantel and fireplace surround differently by painting it another color (grey, tan, etc.). Replacing the existing stone surround with a warmer color material would be a nice change. Perhaps using a smaller scale tile around the the actual fireplace opening as well. Good luck!

**Q: How can I UN-Modernize this super modern kitchen. I don't have the dough to replace the cabinets or countertops at the moment. Need help this is our first home and althought I love the rest of the home I'm not in love with this kitchen. I'm NOT a modern kind of girl.** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I'm NOT a modern kind of girl.

A: Changing the hardware is a good start. Adding a window treatment to warm things up will also help. A nice tile backsplash will make the space feel more cozy, as would a new paint color that has more warmth. Try changing the light fixture as well--perhaps a chandelier or pendant light of some sort. Because of the small amount of countertop space you have, swapping the laminate out for stone would be an inexpensive way to make your kitchen feel less modern. Good luck!
