This included lighting (light fixtures, switch placement, etc.), creating the drawings for the lighting and interfaced directly with the contractor for installation. This became very important as we raised the kitchen ceiling by 24 inches and surrounded it by indirect lighting of Jayne's design. She also interfaced with the companies that supplied all the light fixtures, cabinets, the appliances and the installation contractor. We capped exposed beams in the ceilings of the family room and the living room and Jayne was instrumental in selecting the molding configuration. > > We replaced all the furniture in the family room (custom made drop-leaf table, 4 upholstered chairs, leather recliner, 2 sofas, etc.) and 2 chairs for the living room. Jayne helped with the selection and arranged the sales. She designed the drop-leaf table, made the drawings and arranged for the fabrication. Jayne helped with the selection of the wall-to-wall carpeting for the living room and the dining room (including the installer) and a number of throw rugs for the family room. She helped with the dinning room wallpaper and suggested the person to install it, who, by the way, was the best I've seen. A: Make sure you have a place for a guest to place a glass of water or phone or alarm. And on both sides of the bed for 2 people. The floor works but... **Q: Need help with a chandelier and area rug for our new dining room!** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi, everyone! Our family moved into our new construction home 4 months ago. I need help with ideas for a chandelier to replace the builder's choice in our dining room. Although I have my grandmother's pecan buffet, china cabinet & chairs, the table is new, and our style is transitional/contemporary. The table seats 6-8 (42"x6'). The room is 10'10'x15'. 2' of the 15'; is an extended bay area. The ceilings are 9' and have a tray ceiling. Our budget is up to $500 for the chandelier. We also need a run under the table, about 7'x9'. There are lot's of pictures at this idea book: "rlyoung's dining room". Thanks for any help! A: How lucky you are to have beautiful furniture that is part of your heritage to use in your fantastic new home! I agree that the mirrors have to go. Too big and tall for the breakfront. Use more horizontal art or sconces. Yes I think you did upholster those chairs. The fabric is lovely but they should really be done by a professional to get the padding and the crown correct. Right now they really do not look very comfortable to sit in. Perhaps adding a skirted seat would add more personality to the room. Look at slipcovered chairs for ideas and styles. That would work so well with the style of your furnishings. As far as chandelier is concerned, look as ebay and craigs list to stay in budget and get the max for your $. Something iro with glass beading for a touch of whimsy would be nice as mentioned before. Look at size and function first. Rule of thumb is chandelier diameter is 1/2 width of table. Bottom of chandelier should be about 30" from top of table. think function too. Will you need extra lighting from this fixture for board games and craft projects and homework or is it just for mood when dining? Thank youuuuuuu A: I would use a warm (brown) gray - like Ben Moore HC- 80 or HC -83 - for the walls, a deep red at the backsplash (space between counter and upper cabinets), and then add knobs and pulls in black to give it some personality for little investment. **Q: Boring dining room** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello, What can I do to update my dining room without changing the table and chairs? Help pls A: Love the symmetry of the space and the great ceiling. I would begin by determining a new color scheme or just an addition of color pop (red, eggplant, burnt orange, etc) to the existing palate. Re- upholster the chairs in a colorful print or pattern and coordinate to new window treatments. The existing wts are too heavy and too short for the space. I would do something lighter and more whimsical and take the fabric up closer to the ceiling line (at least another 12") and then also closer to the walls to make the overall treatment wider. Also take the panels to the floor. These look like you skimped on fabric! More fabric at the window will make the windows - and the room- look much larger and grander. Do you have a view. It would be great to allow natural light to come into the space. Then an area rug - as large as you can afford, a buffet table with art or mirror and sconces on the left side, and a lower floral arrangement that can remain on the table when using it. Tall arrangements do not encourage conversation and are uninviting:) Good luck. It looks like a terrific room to start with! **Q: Don't know what to add extra !! Any ideas** *(in Design Dilemma)* A 5 yr old 3 yr old bedroom boys bedroom A: Love the baseball seam idea. Think the ceiling should be painted a royal blue. Agree that while it is a great start, the shelf is too small and high and the names are too high. The wall feels too overwhelmingly bare for these little ones. Remember that a space is never done, especially a child's room. It will grow and morph and change with them.
