Moving in to a brand new house and here is the mantel with a clock I want to use (non-negotiable). Have a few ideas: 1.) I have several large paintings to chose from that I could center above the mantel but then the clock needs to be moved over to the side and something else of height (maybe candlesticks) on the other side. 2.) Clock in the center and a pair of similar paintings, one on each side of the clock. 3.) Clock to one side and a large painting off-center toward the other side. Thank you in advance for your assistance and input. A: The clock is slightly under-scaled in relation to the mantle & fireplace. To give it better scale and sense of importance, put a 4 1/2" plinth (box) under it which extends about 1 1/2" beyond the bottom of the clock. The plinth could be made of anything from wood (painted or stained) to marble or granite. If you were to use marble or granite , I suggest the same material to cover the brick fireplace surround which is out of place with the style & material of the fireplace surround & mantle. **Q: Please help with my ugly and oversized fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)* I am reducing the size of this mantle/fireplace. What size should I reduce it to, height and width. One option is to reduce it to the size of the beige brick paint the brick white and finish with nice mantle moulding. A: A few questions first: What are the room dimensions? Length X Width X Height 2\. What is the room used for? 3\. What are the architectural (floors, walls, ceiling) major finishes in the room? 4\. Are there any other windows other than those flanking the fireplace? 5\. Is the fireplace the only focal point? Large flat panel screens often become a major focal point. 6\. How much are you willing to invest? (As little as possible is not a budget, it's a wish) 7\. How would you characterize the look you wish to create? Pictures of the furnishings and window coverings would help determine the design path to take. 8\. Is the fireplace mostly decorative or is it used relatively frequently (more than 3-4 times/year) **Q: what are the dimensions of this table?** *(in Photo Questions)* A: 54" × 120" at least -Allspace Interiors **Q: Bathroom Makeover Help!** *(in Design Dilemma)* This is a bathroom that needs a makeover. I need to do the most bang for my buck. The cabinets, trim, and doors are honey oak, tub off white, brown tile, brown floor. Throwing around the idea of building up the half wall at the end of the tub and making it a walk in shower. A: Rather than paint you could stain the oak in a grey, mahogany or ebony wash, the neutrals currently in fashion. With so many great ceramic tile designs and light fixtures available you can quickly update the look by adding framed mirrors and contemporary hardware. The finishing touches for strong punches of colour should come from towels and possibly window treatments. If you are looking for some sex appeal, adding a framed print or 2 by Tamara de Lempecka will get the job done. **Q: What can be done.......** *(in Design Dilemma)* Need help with the exterior. If you look closely there is also wrought iron detail on entrance and around windows. Is there any details or paint colors which can give this home a fresh updated look? Thanks, Designed Blocked A: From the photo, the overall appearance is very bland. It needs some "punch". Unfortunately the photo may be a bit misleading as it was taken on a sunny day with the sun behind the house. However not all is lost. I suggest you pick out a deeper tone from the variegated brick colour to paint the ironwork. But don't go to black. Start with that - it may not need anything more. It should make the entrance more of a focal point.
