What type of wood finish does our space need?** *(in Home Decorating)* So we've recently completed a renovation where we really brightened up a 70s home and opened up the floor plan. We're now faced with finding furniture that fits in well. In some rooms (i.e. the master bed) we already have furniture and we are just rolling with it - but for most of the living/dining/kitchen area we will be getting new stuff. What color/finish of furniture do you think would work well? The walls are SW Mild Blue, floors are a whitewashed wood look, cabinets are white and navy. I want to avoid overly weathered/gray furniture because it gives the space a REALLY "beach cottage" vibe & it gets a little monotone. I'm also not a huge fan of white furniture - we have a tricolor corgi and her black fur shows up the worst on white furniture. But furniture with a white base and wood finish top would be on the table (no pun intended). Also - ignore the furniture that's already in place. Suggestions? (Apologies for the pictures, we literally JUST "finished" haha) A: We have noticed with past customers that walnut works well in their 'blue' space! **Q: Kitchen reno. Totally opened up our space** *(in Remodeling)* Our little 750 square foot slice of paradise on Maui made it difficult for two people to work in the kitchen, so we opened it up and installed an island. So much more functional space. It has doubled the size of our kitchen area. Also created a "between the studs" closet for broom and canned goods. Made the barn door hardware myself with patio door wheels and some creative thinking. Created a focal point over the oven by mixing glass tiles. Waves above and off white glass subway tile. Since the walls were already torn up, had the piping run to install a pot filler. A: Awesome! Loving the pineapple! **Q: I'm just happy and want to share some satisfaction :)** *(in Before & After)* We finished our living room a few days ago! We basically gutted the whole thing and remodeled it ourselves. We opened the wall to the stairs and refinished the antique Douglas fir floors as well, which was a hassle. The result is a beautiful modern craftsman with some rustic character. Enjoy! A: Great work! We are a fan of the live edge table! **Q: Red oak family room remodel** *(in Before & After)* Our family room had red oak parquet floors, wall panels and wall unit. It was so dated. We had a huge dilemma whether to stain or paint the wood panelling on the walls. Staining the walls and wall unit would have been a lengthy and expensive project and at the end of the day would not have given us the modern look we were looking for. We decided to paint the walls in a neutral taupe/grey, changed the flooring to high end laminate and we redid the entire wall unit inserting a 72" electric fireplace in the middle with a tv on top. A: Great work! Greys are very popular. **Q: Help Designing Our Dining Room - Round or Rectangle?** *(in Furniture)* We are ready to furnish our formal dining room and need a lot of design advice. Our home does have an eat in kitchen area so this room would be used to host bigger groups of people. We have two young kids and often host other young ones so we want this space to be kid (spill) friendly yet elegant enough to host an adults only meal from time to time. I am attaching measurements and photos of the space. The first decision we want to make is if we should go with a round table vs. rectangular table. We really like the idea of a large round table, but not sure what size would work in our space while comfortably accommodating 8 adults (with the potential of pulling up 2 more chairs for a total of 10 people - less comfortably). Is that possible given the dimensions of our room? Should we just stick with a rectangle table? A: A round will likely work better with the shape and function of the space. Often laying out the shapes and sizes can be helpful to see how it will look in the space. Using cardboard, painters tape, blankets, etc can help simulate the table. We often suggest 24" per person for elbow room. Then as far as wall or furniture clearance, a minimum of about 30-36". If you have more room that that, even better. A 70" round will fit 8-10 people. Chairs size and level of individual comfort will impact the space allowed per person, but this size will function well. Feel free to contact us will any questions! **Q: Are ogee edges out of style now too?** *(in Remodeling)* I was wondering if ogee edges are out of favor now too. It seems as if almost everything is a flat edge. A: We fairly frequently will make a table with the ogee edge. It can be a bit more of the traditional look.
