### Reviews

**★★★★★ — Nicola Ellis, Sept. 2019**

> I reached out to Susan because I wanted to have curtains made for my daughter's room...but there was a twist! I was in the process of adopting my daughter from India. I had just visited her and, while I was there, I purchased 5 saris that I wanted the curtains to be made from. Susan was so incredibly amazing - and excited - to help bring my dream into reality. She created the most amazing drapes using the 5 saris in record time. Every interaction with Susan was exemplary, from the initial consultation, the quote and the fitting, Susan is excellent. I unreservedly recommend her and would not hesitate to work with her again. She is extremely professional, talented, easy to communicate with and kind. She is also an exemplary craftswomen. I am so so glad Susan was able to work with me.

> After researching reviews of numerous drapery professionals, I contacted and subsequently contracted with Susan of SK Designs.
>
> Susan's approach to my drapery needs was very impressive. She provided drapery panels and roman shades for windows in my living area, dining room, kitchen and breakfast rooms using material which I provided. In addition, her recommended option for a french door challenge was the perfect solution.
>
> Susan's prompt and very professional installation completed my project with absolutely beautiful results, proving the reviews to be spot on! I highly recommend.

**★★★★★ — Natalie Hansen, April 2017**

> Susan does outstanding work. I hired her to do drapes, Roman shades, and valances throughout my home. They turned out even more beautiful than I expected. The quality of the materials, workmanship, and installation are five-star and professional in every way. Susan is very easy to work with, and comes prepared with samples and ideas. I could not be happier, and I highly recommend SK Designs.

> I cannot say enough about the professionalism and workmanship of SK designs. Susan is terrific and was able to assist me in choosing the material and color for my window treatments. She created and installed window coverings in my family room and also long dreamy silk drapes for my formal living room. She was always prompt in our meetings and met all the schedule dates. The workmanship was outstanding and my husband and I are very pleased with the outcome.

**Comment from SK Designs:**

> Thank you so much! It was a pleasure working with you, and also a pleasure working with the beautiful silk fabric for your formal living room. The drapery panels are the perfect complement to the lovely furnishings and architectural details in the room. Thank you for your business!

> I love my custom drapery! Initially my ideas were all over the spectrum, SK Designs helped me hone in on details that were specific to my needs. The process was easy, smooth and very professional. SK Designs' beautiful tailoring created rich structure out of a fun textile chosen for our new drapes. Bonus, they also provide insulation and alleviate bothersome light filtering through the window at night.

**Comment from SK Designs:**

> Thank you so much! I think the fabric you selected looks great in the room and I know you are enjoying the blackout lining so that you can sleep in and recover from a busy work week. It was a pleasure working with you on this project! Thank you for your business - Susan

> Susan made custom drapes for my master bedroom, with a grommet edge. From taking the first measurements, to helping me pick a suitable rod, to the final installation (which included steaming the drapes and training them) - Susan was the consummate professional and I'd very highly recommend her. She makes sure everything is perfect!

> SK Designs designed and installed lovely drapery panels for my living room and a guest bedroom. Susan is highly creative, professional and efficient. She suggested fabrics I would not have considered on my own, and they are fabulous. Everyone who walks into my home notices and loves the great new look the drapes have given my living room. I couldn't be more pleased with my beautiful new draperies!

**Comment from SK Designs:**

> I needed Roman shades in my master bedroom on a tight time schedule and hired Susan to make them, as well as shams for my bed. I had worked with her before in my previous home. This was right after Thanksgiving, which is a very busy time for most in the decorating business. Susan was able to work me into here very busy schedule with total professionalism. She came to my house once to measure and pick up the fabric, and then once more to install. She was easy to talk to, prompt, and in and out of my house with her installer in short order. The shades and the shams are beautiful and just what I wanted. Susan had good ideas on how high they should hang, etc. and everything turned out perfectly. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting custom draperies, shades or bed linens in their home. I liked my shades so much, I am having her duplicate them for my hallway windows. She also notified me when my fabric at a particular store was having a sale. Always aiming to please her clients, Susan is a true professional and very talented in her craft.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What window treatment for close neighbors????** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on (through) my kitchen window. It is the only window, except the door, and it's over the sink.
We didn't expect to have "deco doors" on the ends of the cabinets, however, the cabinet company messed up and this is how they would "fix" the matter (or having me sand and paint). Now the window molding is off and looks odd. Another problem is that my neighbors are very close. I need light but privacy too! I don't want to have this shade down all the time. This is a new kitchen and we had a soffit before. I had made a valance and cafe curtains for that. I don't know if I should do the same.
The walls are a puddy color and the floor (we left) is a dark tile. Our counter comes in this week and is a white (with black) quartz. I was thinking a black color with some kind of white geo print? Any ideas? Advise? Thanks!!!
Susan

A: A treatment that allows filtered light and adds a decorative element would work great. Here are two photos showing a before & after example of a laser cut fabric used for the same purpose as you are hoping for. These are from my colleague, Its Oksana, who is based in Chicago. You could use the laser cut fabric for a roman shade, which gives you more options for raising and lowering for viewing and for cleaning.

**Q: Window treatment for new master bath** *(in Design Dilemma)*

After 3 long months our master bath remodel is finished. We used the azul fantasy granite with matching sparkly glass mosaic tile trim. Travertine porcelain tiles in the shower and floor. Now I am trying to choose fabrics for Roman blinds on the 3 new Windows. Do either of these work. Also my house is a 70s ranch so the bath is open to the bedroom

A: I like the top blue print one. It would look nice with your tile work and counter tops without being too strong or overwhelming. A nice complement to the room. I would recommend using interlining for softness and blackout lining to prevent light bleedthrough, so that the fabric color remains true even during the day when light is shining on the window.

**Q: Lining for silk curtains** *(in Design Dilemma)*

What is the best lining fabric with blackout for silk draperies? We hear that if the lining is too heavy, it will not show good with silk drapery.
Thanks!

A: I offer two options for my clients who want blackout lined silk drapery panels. Option 1 is interlining and blackout lining. Option 2 is the French blackout method, which consists of 4 layers of fabrics: the main fabric (silk), then interlining, then black lining (lining that is colored black), and then white (or ivory) lining. It adds nice weight and fullness to the silk and hangs beautifully. The photo below shows my drapery panel sample: the left side of the photo shows French blackout layers; the right side is Option 1 above (silk, interlining and blackout lining).

**Q: Curtains** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Where to hang curtains for narrow arched windows

A: I agree with JMittman; mounting the treatment higher will take advantage of the great height that you have available and will look great and elegant.

**Q: bed in front of window** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello!
How can I soften a bed in front of a window and make it look like it was meant to be there?

A: You can add a lovely window treatment behind the bed to add softness and continuity, as shown in this rendering.

**Q: Love this valance.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Is this valance done on a board. What does one do when needed to clean them?

A: Yes, this is valance that is board mounted and attached to the ceiling in this bathroom. Cleaning is done with a vacuum attachment to remove dust.
