It was harsh. We had some miscommunications mostly because I should have expressed my concerns more directly. Once my review published Michelle contacted me immediately. Michelle and Miles worked over the weekend to rectify my concerns. I am very pleased with everything that Michelle has done so far. The products are very high quality and beautiful. As I walk around my house and look at the lighting, pictures, wall hangings, rugs and furniture, I smile from ear to ear. I am still awaiting the bulk of my furniture but we are stuck in the supply chain interruption caused by COVID. I know this is affecting Michelle’s entire business and it’s very frustrating. My wife and I hired Michelle and her husband, Miles, to perform a kitchen remodel for us with a $20K budget. We met in late August and formalized an agreement with them September 8th putting down a $1,500 deposit. In early January we met with them to cancel the agreement after no work in our home had started. Over 4 months... The first month things were fine and then everything drug out, delays, more measuring needed, etc. Still didn't have all items picked out. I could go on with the issues! In the end we lost all confidence in their ability to do the job and provide work that is clearly stated for her/them in their agreement. I will not go into detail, but I would highly recommend you search elsewhere if planning to spend thousands of dollars. Maybe or $20K budget wasn't worth their time. **Comment from MM Design and Decor, LLC:** > One of our main objectives, in addition to providing excellent original design, is to be respectful of our clients' investments. We've spent years developing our detailed proposals so that our clients are fully informed in advance of important details and phases of their design project. Clear communication between all parties (including between clients) is imperative. That is why we keep all texts, emails and notes on each project. > We explain in our initial meeting that on projects such as a kitchen renovation, we need to have all materials on hand, PAID for and decisions made prior to starting the project so that the job can be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible with minimum disruption to the client. Our proposals are very clear and our design fees are quoted separately from other facets of the project. We also require that materials and merchandise must be paid in full! On this job, custom cabinetry and tile were ordered after being selected and approved by the client. Custom cabinetry takes time. Our design fee on this project was $1500, which was paid. However, the custom cabinets and tile invoices have not been paid. Design fees are not a down payment or deposit on the job. The design services were performed and completed. Because the project was to begin in mid-November, the clients decided to postpone the project until after Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. On November 29, we were notified not to order any more materials. We were told in late January to stop the project. To date we have not been paid for the custom materials. > Each client's project, large or small, is important to us. We regret that we could not complete what was to be a lovely kitchen remodel. **★ — Summer Robison, April 2019** > Michelle was very kind and personable but I felt she did not understand the look I was wanting. I live at the beach and was wanting a coastal cottage feel with lots of whites and seasalt blues and I received mostly options of teal, beige, green, and a different shade of blue without a portfolio to help me envision the finished product. She was very kind to refund most of my money but in the end I lost $350 and was in the exact same place as I was before I started working with her. Since then I have found another designer that was able to see my inspiration and design an entire room for me in the form of a portfolio in just two days that I loved, felt confident in, and wanted to move forward with **Comment from MM Design and Decor, LLC:** > Explaining the professional design process to a client can be challenging and clear communication is an absolute must. Two of the most important requirements are that a client make timely decisions and and give us their budget up front. We strive on each project to provide each client with exceptional original design that will enhance their home and lifestyle. There are many aspects of the design process including budgeting, space planning, selection of products and materials, and implementing the design. We try to explain the importance of each phase of design and do our best to exceed our clients’ design expectations. Our design agreement is clear and covers many situations. Communication is key. Therefore, we keep all notes, texts, and emails for referral if questions arise. > > Miss Robison was a very pleasant 23 year old who stated on Houzz that she needed design help with wall art, lamps, sofa and bedding décor for her apartment. From the initial phone interview, she told us her budget was under $5,000. At that time, our design process was explained to her and I met with her on March 8. Upon arrival, I recognized the Sherwin Williams color that she had chosen, “Sea Salt”, as I have used it on previous projects. As we toured the apartment, she pointed out several pieces of used/refurbished furniture and an entry level sectional that she had previously purchased that she wanted to incorporate. The scope of her project would now include the living/dining room, master bed/bath, bath accessories, bath shelving, nightstands, an accent chair, bedding, artwork, area rugs, throw pillows, lamps, mantel shelf over fireplace, chest/hutch and an organizational bench in the entry. I explained to her that her new budget of $2,000 would not be sufficient to provide all of the products she wanted. At that time, she stated that she was “picky”. I did not feel that this would be an issue as we have worked with all types of personalities and had pleased them. She decided to begin with bedding selections. > > After the agreement was signed and the design fee paid, we began work on March 14. Miss Robison was sent an initial group of bedding sets that her budget would allow. We try to limit the options presented to a client so as not to overwhelm them. She chose one that she was drawn to most. Through a lengthy process, we discovered she liked paisley and baroque patterns. I suggested that solid bedding and adding patterns might be her best option. Several times she chose something that she liked or loved and then changed her mind later. She was shown bedding with cool colors including white, linen, aqua, sea salt (exact paint color), soft blues, light beige and light gray. It became clear that she would need custom made bedding to get exactly what she wanted. When she made what we thought was her final decision, I offered to send her swatches of the fabric she liked. She had now been shown over 30 options for bedding. She also chose an area rug and was presented with solid linen pillows in colors to coordinate with the rug. Abruptly on April 3, Miss Robison notified me she didn’t want to continue due to her budgetary constraints and us not understanding her vision and that she would continue on her own. After having well over 15 design hours in this project (we estimated and billed based on 5 hours), we terminated the agreement and refunded her $400. > > One of our main objectives is to not only provide excellent design, but to be extraordinarily respectful of our clients’ investment.
